Yeah, since '77-'78. Don't forget the nucleus of punk: The Ramones....Kick-ass music before it was even fashionable to call it punk rock. Not as much fun to listen to, although receiving honorable mention are the Sex Pistols. Green day and ( early ) Offspring today carry the torch for the genre IMO.

I was a drummer in a Sacramento punk rock band. I comutted in from the bayarea. I like some punk, but I like blues as well as just regular rock.

The band that I was in was called Zodiac. I left the band because of the comutte. Also, I was getting pretty annoyed at the band members.

I was part of the early punk movement back in high school (1979-81) before it was fashionable. EARLY EARLY EARLY bands such as Siouxie & the Banshees, the Germs w/Darby Crash, FEAR, Public Image, Nine Nine Nine, Dead Kennedy's, on and on and on..I used to hang out in LA at the Whiskey a Go Go, the Starwood, the Atomic Cafe, Cathy de Grande and in SF at the I Beam, California Hall, the Russian Center, the Mabuhay Gardens, etc. etc. There was always the original English punk of 1977 onwards such as the Sex Pistols, Siouxsie (any old Siouxsie fans? Probably not, most of you werent' even born yet! I was a HUGE fan--saw her in SF and in LA in 1981), the Clash, and the later California punk such as the Circle Jerks, Black Flag, 999, but then all this became 'in' then we had such bands like the Go Go's, Adam Ant, the Cars, the Police, Bow Wow Wow which were really considered "new wave", I by then had moved to 'Ska' music (madness, specials, english beat) which of course, after a year more became mainstream, so I went to Top 40!!
