Today- 1/28/01- 15th Anniversary Of Challenger

Mon Jan 29, 2001 6:20 am

At about 11:40 A.M. Central Time, I looke at my clock and was quiet for a while, even though it was 11:38 EST, not 11:38 A.M.Central Time when something very significant happened.. Today is January 28th, the 15 anniversary of the worst disaster in space exploration history. On January 28th 1986, the Shuttle Challenger exploded only 73 seconds after takeoff. Even though ony 7 people were killed, and the number may not seem high, the shatterning explosion and flames follwing trailing the boosters aimlessly made it seem much worse. I don't remember anything about this because I wasn't even one year old. But I have become interested in this. Today in St. Louis, it is very cold, and gloomy, a kind of day for remembering this accident. I have been thinking about it most of the day.

I was in band when I heard about it. Our band director was such a jokester, we didn't believe her. She looked so sad when we said "yeah, right." Then in the next class, science, the principal came over the PA and told us that it was true. We didn't really learn anything the rest of the day. Everyone just sat and cried.
