Your First Online Foray

Wed Jan 31, 2001 12:13 am

How long have you been online? What e-mail programs have you used? Do you remember what the very first webiste you ever visited was?

I have been online since fall of 1996. The very first web site I ever typed and looked at was the Western Pacific site,

As for e-mail, I'ved used Novell Groupwise, MS Outlook, and AOL.

I've been online since only about a two years ago, this month. I started with WebTV, realized that sucked. Oh the first thing i went ot was a porno site, just joking, actually a chat room and stayed up atill 3a.m. on a school night. After I decided I didn't like WebTV anymore, I had my mom buy me a Gateway laptop (Solo 2500), and i Had MCIWorldCom on that. I liked it too. But that laptop met its dimise when me and my sister got in to a fight and she punched the screen and caused 1100$ damage, decided not worth fixing, so then mom boutght me a Hewlett Packard right after, which was about 3 months ago. On this I have AOL, which is OK, but recently I find I get booted more often. I started with AOL 5.0, then upgraded to 6.0, which i am happy with. So, there is my 'net story.

Wow, I'm looking like a veteran here. My first use of the internet was through newsgroups and email accessed through a BBS called MAGIC (Macintosh Awareness Group in Canada). That was in late 1992. My first use of the WWW was at high school in late 1994...using Mosaic browser and later Netscape 1.1.

I have since worked for two internet providers, both of which have gone bankrupt shortly after I quit (seriously)  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

The first site I think I went to was Microsoft - it was the homepage default ok? LOL In the begining I spent alot of time in the Yahoo Chatrooms. I was a long time Netscape fan (Version 4) until IE4 came out - it took alot of time to get used to but now I would never go back!!

I think the first time I was online was either 1995 or 1996. I have used just a phone line, then Time Warner's Road Runner high speed online service, and now I think I have a Cable modem and at my dad's office we have a DSL system.

I have only used Microsoft Internet Explorer when online. I think programs like AOL add too much hassle in order to get online. Right now all I have to do is click the IE icon and I am at my Excite home page.

Email systems I have used are Outlook Express and now Hotmail.

I first got online at Highline Community College (my sister was attending while enrolled in high school, as well) here in Seattle back in '94. First site I visited was and I also frequented I didn't get it in my house until much later, probably '97. As for email, I use Hotmail (ISP email is unreliable, I think) via the website because Outlook barely ever works for me.

I first got online in August of '99. My first ISP was I switched to AT&T Broadband when Gateway started using AOL. The first site I visited was Yahoo!, since that's where my Gateway homepage was. I've always used IE 5.0 for my browser. For email; Outlook Express (my ISP mail), Hotmail (for giving out on the web) and Outlook (work).

I remember getting AOL Floppy Discs!
Those things were great because you could delete the junk on em and make a brand new floppy! I wish we could do that with the CDs  Big thumbs up

My very first web experience was in 1994 with Mosaic. The first web site I visited was computer-parts dealer in my then-hometown (only web address I knew then!)

Sorry, I forgot to add the points Matt was looking for:

-My first website was school's first webpage. Of course they now have a different URL.
-My first email on the net was sent through a BBS software called FirstClass.
-I got home access (28.8) in June, 1996. First with MSN and AOL for one month trial periods, then to Vision parents still get service from them. I used to live on those AOL disks for school projects and the like! Too bad they use CDs now  Sad
-I first signed up with Hotmail in 1995.

The Real Internet

Wed Jan 31, 2001 12:56 pm

"On line" since 1982 (I was in college, majoring and graduating in computer sceince and mathematics) , when the Internet was basically an off shoot of Arapnet. At that time it was all the Universities, government laboratories, Smithsonian etc, online as a research tool for Mathematicians, scientists, computer experts and intellectuals. The browser was texct based and reminded one of IBM's mainframe based OfficeVision370 (which by the way was the FIRST productivity suite, not MS Office...heh heh).

Anyhting you needed was at your fingertips stuff like Quantum machanics, Bay's theory, history, chemistry and seismology among others. This was the days before crass marketing, tastless porn and mindless forums  Smile.

I have been with CIS and Prodigy since 1988 and used their own proprietary software anda 2400 baud modem....

My how tthings have changed....

I have been on line for the last 6 or 7 years, and have used AOL the entire time. I know I first used AOL for IMing friends, or playing against them in the AOL games rooms. I didn't use the WWW much back then. I still haven't gone the way of high speed access to the internet, still use my 56k modem. If I want to download stuff I just use the T3 connection at my school.
