I like Yosemite, Sequia, Bryce, Badlands, Joshua tree and Death Valley. What NP do you like?

Gotta agree with you there, N766, Rainier was beautiful, camped out at Cougar Rock and Camp Muir for 5 days and it was amazing!

Didnt like Yellowstone too much, but Grand Teton was nice-Arches was cool (saw the famous arch), and Olympic was allright-didnt penetrate as far as I wanted to on the large part, but the beach part of Olympic was spectacular!!

Never been to Rainier but saw it. Olympic is awsome. Mx5_boy the spelling is kosciuszko (He was a Polish hero, he fought for American independence). Thats where the name Mt. Kosciuszko comes from.

Yes, Olympic Natl Park is nice too, but I get to wake up every (non-overcast) morning to Rainier, and it is a sight to see. It'll be a shame when it blows its top. Oh well.
Greg- you're lucky! I was going to go camping (ice caving, actually) up at Rainier, but wasn't able to  Sad. I imagine it was a great experience. I like just driving on the state highway that goes all of the way around the mountain- its spectacular.

I believe Oly has one of the biggest rainforests (and I mean rainforests) on the US mainland, by the way...

My favourite in the US is Olympic as well. Saw lots of salmon jumping up the stream there. In Canada, my favourite is Pacific Rim. The temperate rainforest is really amazing...but sadly is getting very rare.

The spelling is Kosciusko (no Z)...anyway, we arrived in Washington after driving from Southwestern Montana and spent a day and a half on the road- arrived at Rainier on July 14 and spent the 15th-through 18th at snow school and doing the climb itself-the 19th we were in Cougar Rock, had a huge banquet, and were allowed to call parents for the first time in 3 weeks-then we drove to Forks to get mail-stopping in this very weird city of Aberdeen, WA (have you been there, N766, it scared every one of us), then proceded to a campground on the coast just within the southern boundary of Olympic NP. We made a quick day hike in the Hoh Rainforest. Then the next three days we spent beach-hiking-a really enjoyable experience, then headed east towards Idaho. We spent one night in a campground in central WA, then spent another in Central Ferry SP in eastern Washington (slightly spooked by the sign: No Services:next 50 miles), and did laundry in this pizzeria/laundromat in Pomeroy, WA, then we drove out through Clarkston, WA-thats my one and only visit to WA...

Probably one of the only ones I can remember I have been to, and therefore my favorite one, is Zion National Park. The valleys and views from the top of the mountains/plateaus are amazing. Best of all, Zion is right under the "Air Traffic Lane" that Air Traffic Controllers send all planes going to and from Minneapolis and the West Coast. Just look up and you can see tons of NW and Sun Country planes overhead. Pretty cool. Big grin

LOT-

Until seeing it on this forum, I never saw it with a "Z", in NYC there is a Kosciusko Bridge, and its spelled w/o the "z"

Every map I've ever looked on has it without the "Z" The set of encyclopedias I own spells it without the "Z"

Where are you getting the "z" from?

Can I ask why we in Australia would name our highest mountain and a national park after a Polish man who fought for American independence?

It is long overdue that Kosciusko be given a name which is actually relevant to us here in Australia.

Maybe it should be renamed to Strzlecki, although there is already the Strzlecki Track.

Either way, Kosciusko means diddly squat to us, and it should be changed!

I have been there (quite a few years ago, though)... what was so scary about it? Hmmm.... Forks is cool, though.

You say you stopped in Central Washington? Probably Ellensburg then...
Hey- did you pass through George, Washington (probably, since I-90 goes through it)? Its the town right next to Martha Lake...hehe

I know my Australian history...and I know why it was named Kosciusko.

Suffice to say, Kosciusko means nothing in Australian history and culture apart from Strzlecki naming it Kosciusko "amongst a free people who appreciate freedom".

What I said is Kosciusko, means nothing to me, and it means nothing to 99% of Australians. Let's give it an Australian name, not one after a Polish man who had nothing to do with our country.

Like I said, Strzlecki would be more suitable. Or even better, an Aboriginal name, seeing as they were the original people of the area.

My two favorites are Yosemite, which is absolutely stunning in the winter, and Glacier National Park up in Canada, beautiful scenery, enormous canyons. Great hiking in both areas.

LOT-

Australia, to the best of my knowledge, is in fact a country whose official language is English, hence, no "z" in the spelling at least in the mountain and bridge...

Actually there is a push at the moment by the Geographical Naming Board, or whatever they are called, to put the "z" back into "Kosciusko".

As I said before, why not forget about the "z" and "Kosciusko" all together, and give it a name which is relevant.

I liked, Grand Canyon, Brice, Zion, Glacier, Mt. Ranier, and Mt. St. Helens although that place is kinda spooky. I went there last summer, on my 8th grade summer trip.

Oh- and I totally forgot about Bryce... I have family down by Bryce, so I get down there every couple of years. It's a really beautiful place (and a GREAT place to shoot my guns!).
