Cities With Canals

Wed Jan 31, 2001 8:23 pm

I've never been to Venice, but I was in Amsterdam a year and a half ago. Does anyone know of any other cities that have a large and prominent canal system? I'm just curious if there are any other cities that have them. Thanx.

Bangkok has a large system of canals on the Chao Phaya River, called KLONGS, which go all the way up to Ayutthaya (the old Siamese capital).

Chiang Mai also has a system of canals.

You'll find many places in the Low Countries that have canals. Brugges (sp?) Belgium, for instance, which is famous for their lace making. Leiden, Netherlands, home of the country's top university.

You will also find canals in Lowell, Massachusetts, as it was once a factory town that used canals for transportation.

The city where I live, Ottawa, has a long canal called the Rideau Canal. In (our horrible, freezing, unlivable) winter, the Canal freezes and turns into the world's longest skating rink! It's a huge tourist attraction that brings millions of tourists.

In Australia the city with the largest canal systems would have to Gold Coast city. It has a large amount of residential canal development.

Sydney has one as well, Sylvania waters. Anyone remember the dreadful show they did around it?

Cheers,

Venice Beach, California

Ok, it never became a full city of canals like Abbot Kinney [?] imagined but it has the grand canal and some others. In addition there are a lot of walking street like the most famous Ocean Front Walk...
