Legalize Marijuana!

Mon Feb 12, 2001 2:52 am

I know too many people that are in jail because of Marijuana. Why isn't it legal in the U.S.??!?!?
The drug is not even as harmful as tobacco, it's smoke is not as strong as that of tobacco.
How can we send people to jail for doing something to there own body, especially with Marijuana?
If Marijuana isn't legal then we should ban tobacco.

I agree with that....BUT marijuana really makes dirty and illegal money to dealers etc..just like other drugs too, so they don't want that i guess......

"The drug is not even as harmful as tobacco, it's smoke is not as strong as that of tobacco."
Back up your statements with facts.

I think we should be very weary of legalization, imagine all the doped up morons out there who would go driving all stoned out of the gord. Imagine how the amount of birth defects in our country would jump, no expecting mother should be subjected (First or secondhand) to that substance.

Now i don't condone the use of tobacco, but comparing marijuana is the proverbial apples and oranges. They are NOT the same - Tobbacco does not affect a person in the way pot does.

I sincerely hope this trash is never legalized during my lifetime.

Yeah,

I don't really think the drug should be legalized, but people who are convicted shouldn't go to jail, they should go to re-hab or get help. We still shouldn't be allowed to lock people up for doing things to their own body, especially if these actions don't hurt anyone else.
We need better anti-drug ads, on TV and everywhere else. The ads they have today are to light. If I really knew what the drugs do to the mind and body, as well as the long term affects they may have, I would be able to make a good descision regarding drugs. As you can see i don't really know much about marijuana or tobacco. This is the problem. Instead of throwing people in jail we should enlighten them on the real and awful affects drugs have.

Branvan3k has it right. Back up your facts on saying Marijuana is not as harmfull as tobacco. In reality, the tar Marijuana leaves in your lungs is alot greater than tobacco.

Also, we have enough of a problem in this country with Drunk Drivers. Adding Stoned Drivers to that list just wouldn't be good.

Also, why should we legalize something that is proven to kill brain cells, and cause other harmfull effects, not to mention open the door to other stronger drugs. Perhaps you should lay off the bud there Leftseat86.

Tobacco does not distort your preception on reality as marijuana does. Marijuana kills the brain basically. People who use tobacco can think and evaluate the same as someone who doesn't smoke tabacco, BUT someone who smokes marijuana has harmed themselves mentally forever. Those are the facts.

Drugs are a factor in most crimes and other society-ills, so allowing even more people to have them makes no sense whatsoever.

If marijuana were legalized and sold by the government it would put drug dealers (those dealing in marijuana anyway) out of business. This could play a part in lowering violent crime rates. It would also, most likely, be very heavily taxed, from which the money could be used for education.

That's just my opinion and thought process on the subject anyway...

Hey... here's my $.02..

All substances that affect the mind or body are OK in moderation. I am including ALL controlled substances, including tobacco, alcohol, and marijuana. However, moderation is a very relative term. I don't agree with cigarettes, b/c the risks and harms don't outweigh the positives. However, a little pot will have a greater positive effect on the user, and relatively the same physical harms as cigarettes (before the filters and stuff). Pot isn't even shown to damage the brain in small amounts. It is the same with alcohol. A small amount can be good for the user and relatively harmless physically, while a large amount can be harmful or deadly.

SO... I think that the sale of pot probably isn't much worse than the sale of beer or cigarettes. I stay away from the stuff, but I don't think a little pot would be harmful to society. However, there are always those who abuse.

Oh yeah.. AS737900, I agree with your opinions.

I think all toabaco, marijuana and cocaine plants should be made extinct. This would be the best way to prevent people with no lives from using this crap. Its pathetic and pointles. Both ensalve you in the form of an addiction and interfere with your life on an everyday basis to the point where you cant get a job and end up on the sidewalk begging for spare change. I say legalize it in small amounts for personal use (like alcohol) and penalize for overuse (like alcohol). Kind of interesting to come up with objective measures for "safe" levels vis-a-vis operating heavy machinery, etc. Having the government as a competing supplier -- now THAT would strike fear into organized crime cartels.

Interesting debate..

This whole cannabis discussion is in the media in Belgium right now, following a decision by the federal government to legalize cannabis for personal use.
yes, you heard me, it is now legal to possess small amounts of cannabis (5 grams I believe) for personal use. There are, however, rules on when it can be used, by who, and where (no-one under 16, no public places, not when driving, or when minors are present,...) I believe it's even allowed to grow cannabis for personal use (5 plants max., i believe).
I do not think this is a bad idea. Cannabis, when used in smaal doses, is no more harmful than cigarettes or alcohol. So those are not the users we need to worry about. We need to worry about the ones who ABuse the stuff. They don't need to be punished, they need to be helped. Now who will come looking for help? The one who's got a pretty good chance of being arrested and going to jail, or the one who knows that he will be offered the chance to talk about his problem in an open way? You tell me...

KROC,
It's not because something is legalised that everyone will just jump onto it... There are enough smart kids out there who can stay away from it, and the ones who want to use it are already using it, as you can buy it on every street corner.
The remark about the schools didn't make much sense. You're just overreacting.
PS: you do know where most pot is used, right? UNIVERSITY
Just to clarify things: i don't use cannabis myself, never have, never will...

When alcohol was made illegal in the U.S.,the country saw probably one of the largest crime waves ever as the Mafia would bootleg the stuff and competition between organized crime syndicates led to a lot of violent crime, similar to today with drugs. After it was legalized again, crime rates went down. However, legalizing just marijuana will not put drug cartels or dealers out of buisness. There is still a lot of cocaine and it's deritaves that can be sold illegaly and make quick fortunes for those who sell it.

Hey, if you want to make this stuff legal, just have the government distribute at the local DMV. "What? You mean to tell me this isn't the crack line??? I've been in this line for 3 hours! Screw this shit, I'm going clean!" Make the drug buying experience as miserable as getting your drivers license and you'll see how our country's drug problems will start to get better.....

The point is that people under the influence of drugs aren't only hurting themselves, they are a major threat to all the innocent people around.
Drug user should go to preason for two reasons: to prevent other people from starting using drugs by intimidation and because people who chose to use drugs are obviously too stupid to live in the real world.
For those who are comparing drugs to tobacco and alcohol: we already have a huge global problem because of those substances and our goal as a society is to eventually ban those substances, but since there are too many people using it right now we must use education to minimize the amount of people that are using those substances and then legally ban those substances, now, if we legalize some other substances we basically ruin our chances of having a substance-abuse free society for at least 5 centuries.

Alcohol IS A DRUG!!! It is a common drug and one that is most damaging...more damaging than tobacco.

To EVERYONE

This debate has been covered before, and before dickheads like N766AS with no idea about uses of pot start preaching fucking politics (can you talk about anything else N766AS...or are you that braindead and boring that politics is the only thing you can talk about???).

It also amazes me that people only think about smoking, when thinking of pot!!!

For my stance, read this thread right here

http://www.airliners.net/discussions/non_aviation/read.main/6373/

The biggest myth I have seen on this thread so far, as long as the thread linked above, is that pot use leads to harder drug use. SHOW ME PROOF OF THAT!!!!!!!!!!!

This thread just goes to show how far mankind is from being truly civilized.

The though of incarcerating someone for smoking marijuana is just completley insane. You can go into a Wal Mart and buy guns and amunition, but if you have a small amount of weed on you that could warrant jail time.
This shows how hypocritical some conservatives are. Allowing the government to force there way into your home and throw you in jail for smoking pot. That sounds like government intrustion to me.

Why not throw God in jail for inventing it in the first place?

Well this "reatard" sticks to his guns. Wait a minute, now that I think about it, guns are pretty deadly also.....

The SF Chronicle reported results from a study just this a.m. (2/12) that using marijuana does not lead to heavier drug use. It's more of a situational/generational component upon harder drug use and abuse.

So....the next time you drink your beer (and for some of you it'll definitely be your first one) just remember that you're altering your cognitive abilities just as much as perhaps (gasp) using marijuana.

And when you wake up with that two-bag hag from last call munching upon your privates, maybe you'll think to yourselves, "Gee, I shoulda smoked a joint at home instead.."

There's a right time and a wrong time for each and every thing under the sun.

RealHigh is female.

And I'm a drinker and I don't wake up with a hag munching on my privates (I admit I like that, its funny).

How the hell this goes from a conversation about legalizing pot from someone whos never tried pot to people being called white supremacists is beyond me.

And no. Mary Jane does not lead to stronger drug use. Just because some people want to "graduate" from weed to crack doesn't mean it's weed's fault. I admit I've smoked weed, and it didn't make me a pothead. Actually it doesn't do all that much for me, and since I really don't like smoking I usually pass on it. Trust me, when you're in college you'll get more offers to smoke up than you can shake a bong at.

"I think he has many problems with people who are different."

Yes, I have some problems with certain people, but the fact they are different may or may not be a factor in that. Them being different as far as their nationality, color, sex or whatever the case, plays NO factor, but them being different as far as their political views or general beliefs can however play a factor. Afterall, when you disagree with someone, isn't it usually because they are different in some matter?

RealHigh, go ahead and email about whoever you want, because you can be sure that we all email.

"I've been reading all the B.S. DG-pilot has been blurting out over the past few months and yes..."

See you have problems with my beliefs, why do you expect me not to have problems with yours???

So RealHigh, you seem to easily categorize me, just what have I said that makes me a "bigot", or a "white supremicist"? Huh????? Nothing, you will find nothing. You may find an occasional example on how I disagree with what someone or a group of people practice or preach, but that is not bigotry. I have never preached hate, burnt churches, lynched anyone, or anything even like that.

Like I said, if there is anyone here being a racist or being descriminatory or whatever else you could call, it is you, because you are the one that is categorizing and profiling me into a group based on your clearly false assumptions of me.

Too bad you couldn't meet me, because I know you would take back those assumptions.

I just came back from Spain and I found it refreshing to see kids hanging out in Plazas (small parks) drinking and smoking hash and having a good time with no hassle from the cops or anyone else. I also felt safe in these areas of Madrid Barcelona and Seville and did not hear about violent crime every second on the evening news like in the U.S.

I also visited a couple swap meets and was impressed by the fact that vendors selling porno mags and videos were in the same area as everyone else, Yes, sins of the flesh were out in plain view of woman and children.

America needs to lighten up!!!!!! and legalize grass and not give jail time to cocaine, heroine ect.. users, first time sellers should have drastically decreased sentences as well. Also We should not be so up tight about sex & nudity. For god sakes my friend just about got bitched out for breast feeding her child in an L.A. Mall, well actually it was Glendale which we used to call Regandale anyway, you get the picture.
