Valentine's Day - Evil Or Good?

Wed Feb 14, 2001 8:14 pm

Hi!

Today we all had a brilliant laugh: In the middle of our lecture, a security guard walked in, with a HUGE (70cm long, 40cm wide) pile of roses and two bags full of goodies for one lucky student. Just funny!

However, I also remember all the horror and humiliation and annoyance of school (primary and high school - eqquivalent) where everyone had to pull a name out of a hat and write them a card. Pure terror - especially if you hardly knew the person you had picked.

Somehow this entire day annoys me (I have never taken part and always just observed the thnigs going on around me with a mixture of curiosity and lack of understanding). Some people get overexcited long before, as if it was christmas, and can't wait until it happens. Some people are optimistic and look forward to it. Most get disappointed in the end, or they get cards from people they did not expect.... On the whole a day of surprises, fun, disappointments and humiliation

What is all this fuss about? This day is probably the weirdest holiday of the year, as half the people enjoy it while the other half suffer. (oh, and some people like me just ignore this cheesy crap, laughing or shaking their head at the others...) Personally, I can't make up my mind whether it is a good holiday, or the evil product of consumerism and the flowers indutry (just as Halloween is the product of the sweets industry) What do you guys think? Keep it, ignore it, abolish it?

Looking forward to hear your opinion

Why don't people understand it is just a commercial holiday that Hallmark, candy makers, and jewelry stores cash in on.

As you can see it's not a good day for Bugs Moran's gang.

I don't have much regard for the holidays, as they have have been so grossly exploited by the retail industry. I think Valentine's day is a day is a much rosier occasion for those who actually have a genuine romance to celebrate. But, no cards, no roses for me. At least not this year.

From what I understand, St. Valentine was a Roman Christian, who died in the year 269 A.D. Anyway, Rome was still dominated by Pagan religions, and you can probably guess why this guy wasn't too popular. Anyway, he was jailed, and then decapitated February 14. It is said that while in jail, Valentine fell in love with the jailer's blind daughter and miraculously restored her sight. Before his execution, he is supposed to have sent her a farewell note, signed "From Your Valentine." He must have assumed she was a fast learner...

I have a lot of mixed feeling about Valentine's day.

I have had a kinda bad day though...

I am in love with two people that I really shouldn't be in love with; and I am going out with someone else.

I have had better days!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Its a good day for chocolate!  Big thumbs up

But today is also a sad day in history. In 1929, the "St Valentine's Day Massacre" took place in a Chicago garage as seven rivals of Al Capone's gang were gunned down.  Sad

Plain and Simple:

Good: If you have someone g/f or b/f, whichever.

Evil: If your alone, or recently broke up, divorce, whatever it may be.

I don't mind the holiday...although in the past few years, including this one, Valentine's Day has come too early or too late for anything significant to occur with the person I like.

KROC hit it right on the head. Trvlr is also right, its just too hard to set a date (Valentine's Day) for approaching your crush, its better to just do it when you feel comfortable.

Valentine's day is great if you have a bf/gf. However, if you are like me and single, it's nothing spectacular.

If you have a g/f or b/f, then Valentines Day is just another big dent in your wallet. Check this out: I give my g/f a Christmas present, then her b-day is in January and shortly thereafter V-Day. My cash flow goes out the window during those 3 months. But hey, the rewards are worth it  Wink/being sarcastic

Betcha didn't know this: the origin of Valentines Day was in a Roman Holiday that was basically involved the worlds biggest group orgy. Christians replaced it with Valentines Day to make it more decent.

I knew it. Apparently, it was celebrated every year to keep the wolves away. If I remember correctly, it involved sacrificing goats and other animals, using their hides to whip spinsters (as encouragement to get married) and young (male) Romans choosing a girlfriend (i.e. sex slaves) out of their town for the rest of the year. When it was abolished and turned to Valentine's Day by the Christians, it was kind of unpopular with male Romans, but very popular with the female ones. I wonder why. Sounds like fun to me.  Wink/being sarcastic
