What The Hell Was Pontiac Thinking?

Okay first of all I would like to hear your thoughts on what the hell Pontiac was thinking when they designed and gave the final go for the Aztek? It has got to be the ugliest thing I have ever seen and I have never seen one on the road (only at the dealership). Anyhow, 2 days ago I was taking my car in to be looked at and the dealership who looked at it had 3 Azteks for sale and I went and looked inside and boy it looked nasty with all these wierd shapes going on up in there. To tell you the truth I would much rather drive a minivan over that ugly excuse for a vehicle. So do you guys think Pontiac made a huge mistake when they decided to produce this thing.

I have seen several of them on the road, and I can't believe the Daytona 500 had one as their offical pace car. Its absolutly aweful. I laugh every time I see one for just the way they look and that someone actually paid money for one. Now the two doo Echo is another piece. That is rediculous, I can't believe people sersiously consider cars like that when there is so much competiton in those price ranges.

They took a chance.
Dodge did the same thing with the Caravan, and it paid off pretty well. Most people thought that they were pretty damn ugly when they came out too.
We'll just have to wait and see about this Aztec. I agree, its pretty damn ugly, but it could grow on people.

Yeah I agree that the Echo is kinda funny looking, I actually saw one when they first came out and the price was quite low (about 10,000 USD) which is probably one of lowest you will find in the US (besides for Kia's and Hyundai's) and it got something like 40mpg, it is just too short and tall. Also another funny car is the Kia Rio, that car looks very similar to the Echo. I still dont understand why these people buy them though.

In my opinion the only good looking cars today are comming from Europe.

Volvo has nicely squared their shit away with a full line of new cars. Sharp looking but front wheel drive.

The Jags are looking nice also. A bit pricey however.

The Germans have a fine showing with Mercedes, BMW, Audi and Porsche. VW is getting a little ugly for my tastes but they are super refined cars.

Saab Makes a descent looking car also.

Then of course you have Aston Martin.

Now lets talk about America. I used to be a Mustang enthusiast. Now I can't stomach the re design. Plain and simple Nasty !!!

The Camaro is ugly and the Firebird overdone, and both built like shit.

That Pontiac Aztec thing....I can't go there it's so ugly.

America builds the best trucks. Only because no one else builds them at all.

An exception is Landrover. Thank god for American truck makers that it's expensive and out of the reach of most people.

Honda is bland bland bland. Though well built. But it's bland.

Nissan is also UGLY. All of it.

Toyota is bland. Trying to build a car for everyone. There all bland except for the Echo which falls into the just ugly category along with that joke of a roadster convertable thing. Yuck.

The Mistubishi redesign of the eclipse does nothing for me.

Infinit....Do they even exist anymore?

Acura...Bland and uninspiring. Even the NSX is too well mannered to be fun.

Olds is out of business...Thank god.

The Vette....Wow. Cheap build but inspiring performance and looks. A near quality car that just needs a little more no a lot more quality.

The new bad boy on the block is the new BMW M3. Need I say more. If I do then it's the M5. You want more performance than that you'd have to look up to the Porsche 911.

The Corvette C-5 Hardtop is the most beatifull car i know.

But about Olds: I was in the USA on holiday this summer, we got a rental car, am Olds Intrigue, and this one was much better then the most european cars i know. It is big (like all american cars), confortable and really isn't ugly.

I don't think the european cars are really better than the americans. Naturally Ferraris are special, but the common cars aren't better.

Designers have to take a chance and they did. Much like the re-design of the Dodge truck, the PT Cruiser (which in my mind is uglier than an Aztek).

If it catches on, I bet many designers will maybe shift more towards this look. And then I bet everyone will change their opinions.

Yea because the Echo looks like and drives like totall crap! This is America we dont need that small of a stupid vehicle take that thing to London or Tokyo where its jam packed and small countries!

You guys know, I presume, how GM/Chrysler/Ford work, right? They make a car and rebadge it under another make. These are called twins. Examples are:

Infiniti I30 = a really nice Nissan Maxima
Infiniti QX4 = a big, more expensive Pathfinder
Pontiac Grand Am/Oldsmobile Alero
Chevy Blazer/GMC Jimmy/Oldsmobile Bravada (all the same car)
Ford Ranger/Mazda B-Series Truck
Dodge Caravan/Chrysler Town and Country/Chrysler (nee Plymouth) Voyager

If you get what I'm saying, all of the above cars are the same, just with different names. The newest car to join this "techno-twin" automobile entity is none other than the hideous, slow selling Pontiac Aztek.

The Pontiac Aztek is a techno twin of the upcoming Buick Rendevous. I've seen pictures of this Buick, and it is just like the Aztek, only a little more rounded and more chromed.

I dont think it would look as bad if the back didn't slant down. But it is mostly aimed twards people who camp alot, and are really recreational people. Its very versitile for those types of actitvites.

The front end is really nasty, too. The turn signals look stupid at that height, and those headlights need to get out of the bumpers. The fuel cap needs to be covered. It is not a Hummer. The rear is nasty. Visibility would be zero if they didn't have that semi-transparent panel under the main rear windshield. That's really unpractical. It would cost a fortune to repair one if it were involved in a rear-ender. The side cladding also sucks, as do the window panels and pillars. Basically, I find nothing appealing of that vehicle, and Pontiac should stop wasting the earth's resources.

I can see why one would drive it if they got it for free, but I personally wouldn't want to be caught to be caught dead in one. Heck, I would be seen in one for all the money in the world.

I agree with you JET. The Europeans make the best looking cars, no doubt about it. They also keep their attractiveness for years to come. Mercedes, BMW, etc come out with a new design for a model about every 7 years or so while Honda, Toyota, etc, just crank them out as much as they can. I just wish they were more reliable. My poor Audi is running like crap and no mechanic seems to want to touch it.

The stuff from BMW is getting kind of odd - have you seen there converitibles(Sp?)?
The Cadilac Escalde is just as square as there other cars so the thing is just as ugly as the Aztec just more room and another 20,000 dollars!
Don't ask why but I just love the looks of the 2000+ Tahoes and the 2001 Silverado 2500 HD (Not the duallie)

Pontiac is very bold... very bold. I don;t know if they planned to make it a failure... They planned on selling 75K, but they only sold 11K. The Daytona 500 had the Aztek as their official pace car because Pontiac aleways provides the car (usually whatever theyt are trying to promote) and they just thought to use teh Aztek... pretty smart. I think it looks just as ugly without the gray plastic body pannelling as it does without...

As for the $20K thing, I know... its not like its a lot of money... but when you could have something so much better (Jetta?) for that much money, why would you go for it? I understamd that there are some people who love the Aztek... but not me.

In Detroit, GM gave 500 Azteks to executives, so that's why you see so many here. The dealers are overstocked. Does anyone know where they are made?Mexico is my guess...

One more thing:

Aztek= Pontiac Montana Minivan + 1988 Pontiac Le Mans.

Yes the Aztec is an abonination from those that gave us the Bonnies, Goats, Birds, and so forth. So "trendy" it comes off as stilted. That's what happens when a company is run by "brand managers". -- BTW Jet pilot: I must say I disagree with your take on the Firebird/Camaro: 4th gen "F" bodies are very well built cars...mechanically and body-wise. Can't be compared to the 3rd gens...perfect body line fits, nice basecoat/clearcoat...and no rattles...but they always had good (V8) engines/drivetrains. The Corvette has no peer: C4's were great performers that needed some refinement--C5's need not apologize to anyone. ( although the C4's looked better IMO ). Volvo hadn't made a car worth a damn since the rugged old "roundy" twin carb 68's. Keeping Volvo's, Saabs, and especially Audi's ( I won't even mention Peugeot, Renault, and the queen mother...F.I.A.T. ) running for image concious owners put me through college.

A great car is definitely the new Volvo S60 T5 equipped with the manual transmission. Anybody who has seen the gear shift and felt how nice it is inside will know what I mean. And it is not boxy at all...it looks like silk.
Also, despite its age, the Acura Integra has aged fairly well, considering it came out in late 1993 as a 94 model.

Italian Beauty - Maserati Merak SS (If you have seen this 1970s-1980s masterpiece, you know what I mean)

I love the Toyota Celica. It has love it or hate it styling. I love it. And I like even more what's under the hood; a four banger with 180 hp. Nice. It's a screamer, I think peak hp happens around 7000 RPM. Jeez!

The Camaro, Firebird, Trans Am is a fast piece of junk. In my opinion the looks are marginal at best.

The car rides like someone installed steal bars where the shocks were supposed to be. The ride is brutal. So brutal that it rattles like a baby's toy.

The fit and finish are poor, but no worse than any other Chevy automoblile.

The interior is plastic and seems....well like plastic.

The seats are unsupportive. The car is overweight. The engine is hidden under the windsheild rendering the eighth plug unremovable unless you take off the header.

The rear axle is solid beam not good for much of anything especially handling.

The engine is a dinosour with it's internal cam as is the Vettes.

The chasis is torrsionaly weak. The front end is cheap McPherson strut. The stearing is overboosted.

Should I continue. I've driven them and wasn't impressed other than the fact it was damn fast in a straight line. It needs refinment it will never get.

Drop by a BMW dealer and ask for a test drive in a new 325Ci with a sport package. Everything will fall into perspective for you then.

To show you what I'm talking about I have a 1987 GNX. #145. Do you know what that is?

It's the fastest production car in America until the ZR1 came along, and then the Viper. And they were just marginaly faster.

The car is put together like shit. It's heavy, doesn't handle all that well even though it's suspension was designed around handling.

But I understsnd what it is. It's faster than I can describe here without using lots of profanity.

My 2000 BMW is an infinetly better car. Silent inside at all speeds. The legendary BMW brakes and steering. Not a rattle to be heard. Amazing handling with it's 50/50 weight distibution. Smooth 5 speed and clutch. Rear wheel drive with posi. Everything about the BMW is better. Except the acceleration.

Where are all the racing Camaros? I see plenty of Vettes, BMW's Audis, Vauxhauls, and Acuras in the touring circuit races.

While the quality has increased in the F body it is has remained stagnant in order with other manufacturers. Everyones quality is getting better. The bar is raised when another manufacturer introduces a new model with better fit and finish.

I rent all the JUNK american cars when I go away on vacation every month. I have hated everyone of them. Especially the Pontiac Grand Am's and Grand Prixs. What horrible cars !!!!!!!!!!

Some people may buy BMW's or Benz's for status but that's not the whole picture. These people are buying the car for all the wrong reasons.

I had just arrived in Germany and was getting on the Autobahn. I was on the on ramp merging, and I was thinking to myself, "shit 2 frickin lanes? This can't be the Autobahn" I was now going to have to find my way off and find the right directions. When all of a sudden an E430 passed me doing about a buck 50.

Don't be mistaken. Mercedes are high speed touring cars designed for speeds well over 100 miles per hour on a routine basis. They are bad ass cars make no mistake. Alluminum cylinder blocks and heads. The general population has a weapon of war and they have no idea what it is capable of.

The European manufacturers have two models of each car. The softened US bound cars with softer springs and shock settings, and then they have the cars that are to be used in europe.

Ever hear of the BMW M5. It's no joke. 5.0 liter 394 HP V8. 275/35/18 rear tires. 235/40/18 front. 13.6 inch front brakes. 6 speed manual trans. 0-60 in 4.8 seconds, and the quarter mile in 13.3. By the way if you didn't know its a 4 door familly sedan.

AllI have left to say is please !!!!! I had a mustang when I was 22 and I thought that was the deal. You'll grow up also.

Thats your opinion, But the Camaro and the Firebird are awesome looking cars.

My Camaro Z28 rides smooth as hell

The fit and finish is great

The interior isnt plastic

The Camaro/Firebird is the most comfortable car I've ever driven. Yes its a little on the heavy side but thats not bad.

Steering is great!!!!! It handles awesome

I personally do NOT like the BMW 328ci. Its ugly, and to preppy for me. (And no it isnt that I cant afford one)

I know a thing about cars to

American cars kick ass

I'm glad you like the car you drive.

The M5 sounds good but is ugly. The Z3/Z8 is the best looking Beamer.

Mercedes Benz is a good car

Mustangs are good cars

I don't know what make. The Saturn L-Series is also a user of the Opel parts bin; it's engine can be found under the hood of the Opel and the Saturn.

And where did you think the Malibu and the Impala are related? I can tell you they are not. Most techno twins look exactly alike, and these two Chevys don't. One is a midsize, the other is a full size. One uses the 3.1 liter V6, the other uses the pushrod 3.8 liter V6. They don't even look the same, and their interiors are completely different. They are not techno twins.

And while we're at it, may I add:

Suzuki Swift/Chevy (nee Geo) Metro
Suzuki Vitara/Chevy Tracker
Toyota Corolla/Chevy Prizm

Actually, the Xterra is uglier...it looks like a box an Imac would come in and that "plastic rack" on top looks like something stolen from a shopping cart at Safeway.

Hey your talking about the Integra aging well, you are pretty much correct. My stepbrother owns a 1997 Acura Integra GS-R and that is one reliable car. He beats the hell out of it and doesnt take care of it (sometimes not changing the oil for 20,000 miles) and it still is holding up. Currently it has 86,000 miles and has only been to the dealership twice for unscheduled repairs, once for a power window that fell off the track (under warranty) and the second time for a oil leak that only cost like $120 to fix. Well considering all the above the car still easily gets about 33mpg with the a/c going and still has plenty of power. Gotta love that Honda reliability.

I personally think the Aztek is pretty cool looking, but only the 4door version. Now, don't get me started on the PT Cruiser... it's just plain ugly. It's a poser car.
