FBI Agent Accused of Russia Spying

By KAREN GULLO
Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON (AP) — An FBI agent accused of giving the KGB the names of three Russian intelligence agents working for the United States was arrested and charged with spying for Moscow, the FBI said Tuesday. Attorney General John Ashcroft said ``individuals who commit treasonous acts against the United States will be held fully accountable.''

Robert Philip Hanssen, 56 and a father of six, is only the third FBI agent ever accused of spying. The government charged him with espionage and conspiracy to commit espionage. He was arrested at a park near his home in Vienna, Va., Sunday night and arraigned Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Alexandria, Va.

Ashcroft said the espionage was ``a very serious breach in the security of the United States. ... Every American should know that our nation, our free society is an international target in a very dangerous world.''

Ashcroft said he and FBI Director Louis Freeh had agreed to immediately launch a review of FBI practices.

Freeh said Hanssen's alleged conduct ``represents the most traitorous actions imaginable.'' He said the full extent of the damage done is not yet known ``because no accurate damage assessment could be conducted without jeopardizing the investigation. We believe it was exceptionally grave.''

The investigation was conducted by the FBI, the CIA, the State Department and the Justice Department.

According to the affidavit, Hanssen voluntarily became an agent of the KGB in 1985 while assigned to the intelligence division of the FBI field office in New York City and as supervisor of a foreign counterintelligence squad.

He independently disclosed the identity of two KGB official who, first compromised by Aldrich Ames, had been recruited by the government to serve as ``agents in place'' at the Soviet embassy in Washington. When these two KGB returned to Moscow, they were tried on espionage charges and executed.

Dustin... I heard a mention of it on the radio a couple hours ago. And no doubt he deserves it if convicted. The new administration isn't going to treat treason lightly like the last one, hopefully...

Depending on your world view of things....his only mistake was getting caught....

I on the other hand hope the book gets thrown at him.

The problem with beating these guys up for selling out their country is that often these people sell out Russians who sold out their country to the Unted States. It's really complicated. How can you get mad at these people for breaking faith with America by exposing those who broke faith with Russia?

Still, though... those ungrateful Russians who take our foreign aid money and still conduct operations against us. This makes me very angry.

New developments in the story...

The traitor gave the names of three people that were recruited by CIA from the Soviet embassy in Washington. When two of them returned to Moscow, they were executed. The traitor was paid $1.5 million plus various jewlry pieces.

Sickening.

One word....

IMMATURE, MORONIC AND PATHETIC!

Well thats three words, but they are all relevant to your comments.

Not funny at all.

----

As to what I think of this. Russia spies on America....America spies on Russia. America spies on all countries on earth, bar three....Canada, Britain and Australia.

What a country does with spies is their perogative, however, I do not believe in "death penalty".

Let's turn this around and ask the question.

Should a Russian who is spying FOR America be executed in Russia, or is he a "American" hero?

Anyway, spying has been around since day dot, and will always be a part of international politics....so get over it...really!

I would completely understand if the Russians executed one of their own for spying for the U.S. or any other country. That's the way the game works.

>Russia spies on America....America spies on Russia

Oh I get it. This guy selling out his nation for $1.5 million is OK now because Russia does it too... I see.
 Insane

>Should a Russian who is spying FOR America be executed in Russia, or is he a "American" hero?

Well, he shouldn't get caught, should he? But seriously, this FBI guy actually gave information that led to the executions of two Soviets that were operatives of the United States. He has blood on his hands. But yes, it is entirely understandable that a nation would quickly execute a traitor and I don't see ANY reason why a country WOULDN'T swiftly execute a traitor.

So I was immature, moronic, and pathetic for responding to it.... ohh I see, its just me. I got it.
