Why Are You Such An Aviation Fanatic?

Tue Feb 27, 2001 11:38 am

Dear All,

I know this topic must have been slaughtered many times over, but I guess you could say I had a "moment" today.

I was driving home and a storm over Southern California had just broken up and the skies were crystal clear, with a few spotty storm clouds here and there. It was about five o'clock and the sun was on its way down. I look up, and clear as daylight, with the sun glinting of the metal, was a United Airlines 777. It just caught my eye, and I sighed "What a beauty."

Its things like this that make me love aviation. There are many other reasons as well. Knowing that it is aviation that connects our world, which lets people travel freely and with ease anywhere they so please, is a wonderful thought. Knowing that when one is flying, they are free from any worldy worries on the ground, they are up in the wild blue yonder. Knowing that one is safer in an aircraft than in automobile, and knowing that when at the controls the possibilities are endless.

I know that this may sound corny, and that many of you say that flying is becoming more a hassle than it should be, but I look at it positively and get nothing but pure enjoyment whenever I think about it, or experience it.

And I also love knowing that there are many more out there who love it like I do.

That just brightened up my day Tzvika!!!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy
I too like to sit on the hill my school is on with my scanner and watch the beautiful sight as airliners from around the world dip in and out of clouds over LA going into LAX. People think i'm a wacko 'cause all I do at recess and lunch is sit on the hill and watch the arrivals come through the sky and arrive at LAX.
I LOVE AIRPLANES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tzvika: I know EXACTLY what you are talking about...I experienced the same thing with a BA 744 when it took off right after a storm...it was sunset so the clouds were bright orange and it was crystal clear...seeing the plane maneuver around the huge clouds was an awesome sight.

When I was growing up, I was growing up in Moscow, near Domodedovo Airport. It had many nice planes, and planes were flying low in the area I lived in. The first plane I knew was IL-62. It is still one of my favorite planes, and I dream of flying in one some time. But IL-62 is what got me into aviation.

Thank you

Alex

The craziest thing is, I have no idea why i remain so attatched to it. It's sub-conscious!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, compared to some people here I don't know how much of a fanatic I would be considered, but I just happen to like airplanes. Don't know why exactly. I like dogs, chocolate, etc. Some things you just like. I had a similar experience with weather and a plane the other day. I was waiting outside for a friend to get home and the sky was all dark and yucky, threatening bad rain. A small airplane (a Cessna I think) was circling around and around. We were getting ready to go to a parade. I was having much more fun watching the plane and wishing I were up there instead of sitting on somebody's porch getting ready for a Mardi Gras parade.

Leftseat,

We hear in Los Angeles have it best in my opinion, with so many airlines from all around the world coming in at all times of the day. I love it.

...and good weather most of the time, Tzvika. Here in Seattle, while the airport is busy, the weather is always nasty. The only good place to watch is at the airport itself sometimes (which is kind of cool with <1/2 mi vis. and watching the planes come into view right over the threshold).

I guess I am a fanatic, too. I even have my ATC radio on 24/7 in my bedroom (tuned to Seattle Center Big grin) and go to the airport every chance I get. And when I get a chance to actually fly in a Cessna over Seattle... there is no feeling that could begin to describe it. I wonder if it'll subside a bit once I start lessons soon.

Over my area to the NW of PHL, we get all sorts of military traffic (from all four branches) due to NAS/JRB Willow Grove being about two miles from my house and I see airliners out of PHL and ABE at somewhat high altitudes, although once at school I saw an AA 727 at real low altitude, which was odd because PHL is about 25-30 miles away and this plane was under 3,000 feet-low enough that I could determine that it was AA-I cant figure that out-we also get lots of light av traffic overhead out of two general av. aprts-Northeast Philly and Wings Field, and lately there has been a lot of chopper traffic...

No, it will not subside at all. Your love of aviation will increase atleast 10 fold once you start flying yourself. Look forward to it.  Wink/being sarcastic I love everything from the oil that gets on your hands, to "hitting the books", to the crosswind flare. It is all a great, lifechanging experience. I would not trade it for anything.
