Absolutely Disgusting.

IMO, the Taliban are "Cultural Terrorists" and no effort should be spared to prevent them from indulgin in these dastardly acts.

I mean a very substantial part of 5000 years of India's Aryan heritage is located in what is today Afghanistan, including these Buddhist and other statues. And this is what these people are systematically eliminating. And their ruse is "Islam forbids statues".

One of the statues being destroyed is the largest standing Stone monolith in the world! I mean how could ayone think of destorying such a priceless piece of history! And i hear they are bringing in Tanks and Cannons to blow down the statues in a public spectacle. I mean, how disgusting!

The Indian Parliament met today to condemn the act. Some MP's suggested that some artifacts could be saved if India/UN offered to bring these out of Afghanistan. Hope other countries also follow suit.

This is certainly a despicable act, but whats worse is that the Taliban is misinterpreting the laws of Islam.

Islam places an emphasis (not a strong one, but certainly an emphasis) on respecting other cultures and even neighboring Taliban allies Pakistan and Saudi Arabia have called for a halt in the destruction.

It's a shame.

The destruction of the priceless artifacts will certainly go down in history as a senseless act of a perverted regime. However, as terrible as this is, it's nothing compared to the unspeakable spread of famine and disease in the country known as Afghanistan. I say known as Afghanistan, because I'm not sure the ruling Taliban are actually living in modern times -- it's as if they're in a parallel universe.

I pray for the people of Afghanistan ( and I certainly don't do that often). They've been subjected to Soviet invasion and repression, and now are subject to even harsher edicts from a one-eyed cultural terrorist. Women have borne the brunt of this. What does it take to get rid of such poisoned minds ruling the majority of this country?

PS As sickening as it is to stand by and watch this go on, I would hope that no money is passed hands by well-meaning foreign governments. I fear it would only grease the palms of the corrupt top elite of the Taliban and go towards even more terrorist activity by Osama bin Ladan and his sick followers.

Let's not forget the thousands of Afghan women and girls suffering there. Before 1997 women lived equally to men. But since this monstrocity took over almost 90% of Afghanistan. Women were killed or serverly injured because of stupid things like making noises with their shoes, laughing in public. Health care is non existant since women cannot be in contact with male doctors and that the only hospital in the county that can serve women is inadequate, as a result many girls and women have died of diseases and other medical ailment that are curable. There was a story I heard about a woman having her toe amputated because she had nail polish on and it was considered according to the Taliban as "indicent" Many have also commited suicide due to depression. They are also forbiden to work or go to school. This is no better than aparthied in South Africa; But in this case it's the gender version. Many countries have cut off all contact and will not recognize their governmet. The Olympics has also banned Afghanistan until their treatment toward women have chanaged. The only counties that have not cut off contact are U.A.E, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan. Even all 3 of these countries have been appalled by the measure the Taliban has taken. By the way; those statues date back to the 5th century. If the Taliban destrys the statues without even considering the offers from other cuntries and museums worldwide to buy it off thier hands then they're dumb as $hit. I completely have no respect for them. Did I mention that right after they took over they set up road block to pull out car radios and destroy televisions to "Free them of evil"?

I think the sad legacy of the Taliban is that it may take another invasion to end their rule.  Sad

They are a culture that is systematically wiping out anything that doesn't conform to the Taliban views of Islam in Afghanistan (which is considered extreme even by the Sunni clerics in Saudi Arabia and the Shi'ite clerics in Iran). It reminds me too much of the Pol Pot regime that ruined Cambodia between 1975 and 1979.

I just read on Yahoo news that the head and legs of one of Budhas (sp?) were already blown up. The article goes on to say that the authorities are going use everything in their power to destroy all the statues and that the destruction will carry on through Sunday and Monday.

A world tragedy has just occurred! Those crazy Taliban savages that run Afghanistan (and have been not only oppressing its female population literally to death) have used ammuition and explosives to destroy the world giant Buddha statues and ALL -- yes ALL !!!!!!!!!! such statutes throughout their land!!!!
ALL, no matter from what century, no matter the entire civilized world and the United Nations and everybody begging and begging them not to do this, offering to pay anything, remove the statues, anything -- starting yesterday they have been destroying ALL ~~~~~~~

I have come to wonder something. Why is it only now that they are deciding the destroy the statues? The Taleban gained control of most of Afghanistan four years ago. If this was truly something that they felt so strongly about, why not blow them up as soon as they took over? There seems to be an ulterior motive here.

I was thinking the same exact thing... it almost sounds like the Taliban is trying to provoke war or something... anyways what they're doing is totally wrong, it shows complete disrespect for anything but their own views, and I hope/pray/whatever that that regime will die a violent death... or at least get them out of power... but I prefer the first  Smile

I hope that all female muslims in Afghan will find the power to rebel along with the males and hang those Taliban officials. I'm quite outraged that Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and UAE recogizes their goverment and find that what they're doing is ok along with the other countries who are doing nothing. Thats how the holocost started and when finally someone interfered with Hitlers plan more than 6 million Jews were killed more than a tird of European Jews. I hope someone steps in before it's too late. I also hope that Afghan women will take their families and leave that country immediatly. Or take over the country and make the Taliban pay for what they've done to all the Mothers, daughters, grandmothers, nieces ,aunts, sisters, etc. I hope that all muslims from all backgrounds will stand up since they are a disgrace to the human race and kind hearted arabs everywhere.
