Donations To Airliners.net, And Its Future

Tue Mar 06, 2001 12:41 pm

In case you didn't read the thread in the Aviation Photography forum, there is a proposal floated about to charge for downloading of photos on this site. I don't want to restart that discussion as it has been covered quite enough, but in his last message, Johan mentioned that he was open to OTHER suggestions as to how to make money besides ads.

I would like to suggest, as a first step: how about voluntary contributions? Some may laugh, but I and probably many other airliners.net users would probably be willing to contribute maybe $10, $20, $50 or even more per year, since there seem to be a lot of enthusiastic people here. Would people be willing to pay?

I had posted a suggestion about the Amazon Honor System, which lets web sites do this but no one seemed to reply. It's only available in the US currently, but someone in the States could volunteer to collect payments, and forward them to Johan when there is a sufficent amount.

Another suggestion is Paypal, that is available to Swedish residents.

Also, Johan, since you are a student, I assume you will be losing the University's hosting of airliners.net when you leave. Do you have any plans as for what will happen to the site after the inevitable happens, or is that still very far off in the future?

I'm not sure about a system of voluntary donations - I would however be willing to pay a fee (10-20GBP/year) for using the forums.

I was also thinking about other things:
There are many "rate this" sites out there, trying to get users to rate certain products. Could airliners.net not offer them co-operation, using the Trip-Reports forum? Linking to trip-reports about certain airlines for a small fee and hence giving them data? What about cabin pictures and so on? People would be interested to know what their plane will look like inside, right?

On the other hand, there seem to be occassions when people sell stuff in the Hobby forum (Safetycards etc.) I think it might be possible to start a small auction section just for airliner-related stuff. Instead of using e-bays or yahoo, people could know where to come for their specialized products and thereby airliners.net could generate a bit of revenue.

Or we could offer people to order postcards/posters of the photos from this site.

And how about this: Someone proposed bringing out a photo-CD, but couldn't Airliners.net bring out a photo-intensive magazine, or one-time picture collection book showing off some of our best shots? (With the permission of all photographers, of course)?

If there was a user fee, I'd probably pay it. But as a donation, I'm not sure I'd contribute regularly. Maybe once at the start...

Ikarus:

I like your suggestions... very good ideas you've got there!

I would as well be willing to pay $10-20 a year to keep this site up and running, heaven knows what I'd do without it!!!

I just noticed that in the forum rules, it says We charge $200 US dollars per hour an ad is visible in any of the discussion forums.

Johan, is this a joke? If not, have you ever tried to charge someone money for an ad in the forum? Could be a source of revenue...  Acting devilish
