The World's Worst City!

Tue Mar 06, 2001 6:06 pm

I think there are lot of worst cities!

1) Beijing. Very heavily, extremely polluted. Smog everyday, everywhere, everytime.

Anymore??

Also, Beijing don't have very good public transport network, making it difficult to travel around!

I hope you were been sarcastic. I wouldn't nominate ANY U.S. city. There are surely many more cities in developing nations where the citizens do not enjoy the standard of living as in most industrialized societies. At least in Detroit, people own cars, live in decent housing, not starving, and can afford furniture, TVs, and go to school.

BTW, aren't *you* from Detroit N312?

The worst I've been to were Mexico-City and Kinshasa and to a lesser extent also Cape-Town.

But there are so many ; Bagdad, Bombay, Bogota, Freetown, Kairo,Algier,Nigeria,Calcutta are-in my opinion-good examples.

Mexico City-The polution and crime is out of control
Los Angeles-Too many natural disasters earthquakes, floods, fires. The LAPD is under a bigger scandel that the NYPD. The crime is also rising especially in downtown LA and the under ground Subway is a joke with only 30 stations on the Redline. The transportation is horible you need a car to get around or your stuck. Reminds me of New Jersey when I went there for all 4 years of high school there regarding the transportation. In Northern NJ it's cow tipping Country. If you really want to see a subway then Go to my favorite cities of New York City or London or even Chicago and Boston as well as DC my other favs. If you look at LA from afar to see the sky line there is a rising smog cloud covering over the city because just about everyone uses a car. I know a girl who came fromthere and she lived there for 10 years and she couldn't stand the polution. If you want to live in out in Cali than San Francisco is your better bet. Delhi, Calcutta(is even worse) and Bombay are also quite polluted. Visited my Uncle in Delhi 6 times while he is a chemistry professor at The University of Delhi and the smog was terrible and the rainy season thats in Asia from April-October didn't help at all. Although Banglore, Odipure and Jaipur are much cleaner and I can actually breath. I hope to go back.

I nominate Bombay and Pune, India. Everytime I go to visit relatives there, I have to buy a special mask that filters air for you...It's really hard to breathe, especially in Pune where you have all those PMT (Pune Municipal Transport) busses and trucks billowing smoke into your face through the open ends of rickshaws. It's so nasty. My eyes can't bear it...They start to water really quickly there. Bombay, now Mumbai, is better because the busses are at least "maintained." Also, Pune has a lot of flying pebbles and junk...I have to get new lenses for my glasses after every trip. It's really getting old.

I agree with Seven_Fifty7, America doesnt have any cities that can compare with some of the shanty towns of Africa, India and South America. Every major American city has something pleasing to the eye about it and luxuries and services that one could not get in a third-world ghetto. I wouldnt mind visiting any US city, because they are all, for the most part (every town has its bad areas) nice cities. US cities may not have all the culture of a Rome or Paris, but they are big and vast and pretty clean.

VirginA340,

While I agree w/ all that you said about LA (although that is what makes it so exciting!) the smog problem is relatively gone and a non issue now. I'm not going to say which cities in the US, but there are many other cities that have a bigger smog issue now than LA ever dreamt of. Next time you come to LA go to The Getty Center and look out and it will be clear, maybe some ocean moisture.

Overall LA does have a lot of social problems like VirginA340 pointed out, but I guess it is because it is so media concentrated the rest of the country hears these things when it is going on in their backyards too.

Deltaflyertoo; I'll be in LA in about a year maybe two depending on how hectic my time is at college. I hope that the smog at LA is now taken care off considering that the primary transport is by car. New York City is seeing a smog problem. I was taking NJ Transit's Midtwn Direct from Dover-New York's Pennsylvania Station and right before the train entered the tunnel I looked outside and was shocked to see smog buildup around the Manhatten Skyline especially in the are between the Empire State Building and the World Trade Center as well as around it. I hope the problems clear up soon.

I think Los Angeles has gotten a lot better in terms of air pollution every since the imposition of smog controls on cars and diesel-powered truck and buses, plus strict fines for other polluters.

The result is a lot less smog alert days, and you can actually see Mt. Baldy from downtown Los Angeles a lot more days per year.

It gets pretty bad in the San Francisco Bay Area nowdays, because of fact all the hills around the Bay Area can trap smog very easily, especially on hot summer days.

I'd say for many many people it is whatever city they happen to live in.

PS: I'm not sure it's politically correct to nominate "anything below the equator" - I admit never having been below the equator, but I think there are many nice cities in Third World countries. Also, saying the place with the nices cities is N. America and Europe sounds a bit arrogant to me.

PPS: Sydney is below the equator.

True - my favourite city is Bangkok which is not in Europe or the US. However, Calcutta, although in a 'poor' country, was so neglected and filthy and just utterly DISGUSTING with no redeeming feature other than it had an airport to get the hell out of there.

Bombay on the other hand, was nice.

P.S. in terms of worst city for feeling safe in, I felt very intimidated in Karachi, Pakistan.

Have you guys been to St.Petersburg or Moscow??!?!
You are crazy to say that Russia has got ugly cities.

Yes, they might be a bit polluted but the architecture in cities like St.Petersburg is absolutely gorgeous. I was there this summer and was overwhelmed with the beauty.

OK it CAN be an American city because this topic is The World's Worst City! and not the worlds ugliest, cheapest, smelliest city so it can be any city in the whole world, it doesn't have to be in a third world country.

I think alot of you are mis-reading what the topic means.

Yes, i've been to St.Petersburg and Vyborg (near the FIN-RUS border), and when we drove the Highway to St. Petersburg, which went through the suburbs, all houses were ugly 'boxes', i've been inside a box like that, and it smelles in the corridors, but if the apartment is well renovated, there's no problem (unless the house collapses), i heard somewhere about a survey that told 70% of the residents in Moscow had been victims of crime in year 2000. Ok, there's some nice architecture in the city centre's but every small village is full of those 'box' houses, if you have seen them you know why i dislike them.

Well, EGGD, what exactly IS meant by "world's worse?" What criteria does the poster (as well as everyone else) use to determine what they think is the "worse?" What do YOU define as such?

Since we're "mis-reading what the topic means" we need you to clarify it for us. Does it mean...

crime?
poverty?
transportation?
density?
terrain?
size?
climate?
architecture?
economy?
housing?
fashions?
girls?
guys?
pets?
dandelions?
bumblebees?
toy stores?

...you get the point. Any standard can be used for subjective definitions of the "world's worse city."

Of course, I am only nominating based on places I've been to.

In the developed world, I nominate Ottawa; a ghost town where the temperature dips down to unlivable temperatures in winter.

In the developing world, I nominate Bhavnagar, India. It is a depressing village in Gujarat. Come to think of it, I'm not sure it still exists after the earthquake!

However, I will not nominate Bombay or Delhi. Yes, they are polluted, and to the shallow, superficial person they can seem depressing, but they have something unbelievable. They really are alive. They are vibrant and quite simply amazing in a way that I cannot describe with words. You simply have to be there with an open mind to understand it.

To define whether it is good or not, i think we should consider:
1 cleanliness
2 crime rate
3 infrastructure
4 pollution
5 location
and this is what I think

Wow, Mexico City, Sao Paulo, LA, Rio, Recife, I see that were in excellent company !!!
Talk about only looking at the negative things and not looking at the good, Mexico and Sao Paulo... two of the largest cities on earth, you'd have to be a bit naive to think that in cities of such size there wouldn't be some or lots of negative to em, but just as there's one side of the spectrum, there is another thing on the other, I can safely say that in some places, Mexico City is one of the nicest places on earth, of course, many people will never care to see that, their loss, not mine  Smile!
