How Do You Celebrate Your Culture?

Fri Mar 16, 2001 10:41 am

Airliners.net is full of an enormous variety of members. There are members from all corners of the world, speaking different languages (except for English, which we all seem to have in common), believing in different religions (or no religion at all), and holding different values, all of which are in great part responsible for the different and diverse opinions expressed on the forums. With such varied backgrounds from all over the world, it is probable that many members have ways of celebrating their own respective cultures through different ways, for example the arts (dance, music, visual), particular religious ceremonies, festivals, or rituals (ex. fasting).

So, my question is, how do YOU celebrate YOUR culture?

I do not have any religion, so I don't celebrate any of that. I am living my own life by my own rules, but since I am from Russia, I speak Russian whenever I can and want to. That's pretty much it.
Money does not bring you happiness. But it's better to cry in your own private limo than on a cold bus stop.

The USA has no national culture like other places. But I guess backyard barbecues and fireworks on the 4th of July would qualify, since that what most of us seem to do.

1. Throw a shrimp (prawn) on the barbie!
2. Wrestle crocodiles.
3. Drink a slab of VB in an afternoon (by yourself).
4. Call everyone including women "mate".
5. Eat vegemite by the jarfull.
6. Keep "emu's" instead of chickens.
7. Have a pet Kangaroo.
8. Live by the mantra:

"Football, meat pies, kangaroo's and Holden Cars."

Cheers,

mb

For us its easy, we just take over the world on March 17th, dress up in our national colours and make idiots out of ourselves.

For the rest of the year, we have managed to inflitrate the majority of cities in the world by placing Irish Bars there and supplying a truth drug called Guinness. These bars usually play strange brainwashing noises called Irish Music.

I reckon that by the year 2020 we will have taken over the world...  Smile

Being Texan, I get together with other grads of the University of Texas on March 2 (Texas Independence Day) and have a good time drinking Shiner Bock and eating barbeque and Tex-Mex. We curse Oklahoma and talk of the glory days of Texas football (when Earl Campbell ruled the roost). After a little two-stepping (only to be done with sufficient quantities of Cuervo Gold), we go home at sunrise with an open six-pack in the pick-up truck (or Mercades, Lexus, BMW, or whatever we drive now) and a pair of rifles on the gun rack yelling "Remember the Alamo, Remember Goliad" the whole way.

That, my friends, is culture.

We Scots are well-renowned for throwing the best parties in the world. The Irish are also great people and so when Scots and Irishmen mix then you know you are in for a good time!!  Big thumbs up
When you hear the noise of the Tartan Army Boys, we'll be coming down the road!

Being German born, and having (unfortunately, involuntarily) spent some time (11 years) in that southern wannabe-autonomous district that is generally referred to as Bavaria (I call it Barbaria), the natural choice would be to:

a) drink lots of beer, during October and the rest of the year
b) be Catholic
c) distrust all foreigner, including the Saupreussen (Germans originating from north of the Main river)
d) wear funny leather clothes and a funny hat with animal fur in it
e) yodle around. (alternatively sing in a drunken and noisy fashion)

Unfortunately I

a) don't like alcohol / beer
b) am an atheist
c) have tolerance as chief virtue of my morals system
d) am a geek and never change my clothes which consist mainly of jeans and T-Shirts
e) have a horrible voice

So I guess I am no model Bavarian..... And I am uncultured and ignorant....

Let's see... I think the most consistant thing I do to "celebrate" my culture is...shovel snow.. I seem to do it often, lately everyday... and then more falls so I shovel that out.. then the plow comes and pushes it all back into my driveway so I shovel it out again.. then the sidwalk plow comes and pushes if back out the other direction but still plows me in.. so I go and shovel that... by the time I come home from work the two snowplows have come back and plowed it all back in again, this time in both directions and usually more of it... so in effect I wake up and shovel and then before I go to bed I shovel some more...

PS: Way in the futre I plan to retire in the south, the heck with our culture  Smile

I am German. At 3 o'clock at night, when no car at all is driving in the whole city, I wait for the traffic lights to get green before I cross the street.

Well since I am from the Caribbean this is how we celebrate our culture during Christmas.

We have a pig roast with rice & peas cooking on the inside. While the pig is roasting we are all playing loud Merengue, Salsa and Bachata music drinking presidente and dancing the night away. When the pig is done we all sit and eat and speak for an hour or two. Then the party picks up again and we dance until 6 a.m. then we take the left overs and make it into a stew and head for the beach. We spend christmas day at the beach drinking on presidente, and just lounging.

That is how we celebrate our culture around Christmas time.

Well, being English, I like to watch drink Eurpean lager in vast quantities in pubs, dance to monotonous electronic music in crowded dingy clubs, and sing football chants on the way home.

I also like watching crap telly, eating doner kebabs, curries, chineses, and anything else that they'll deliver.

We shout and swear a lot, get overly excited about 11 men running around a field after a football every Saturday afternoon.

And still, American women think English men are so sophisticated! And they love our accents. Some were just born lucky I spose!

Well, to celebrate the glory that is Canada. I get out of my Igloo for the day for some Polar Bear hunting eh? Of course the whole while drinking a good strong Canadian beer(sorry but yanks beer doesn't cut it) and thinking of how we can finally rid ourselves of that crazy province of Quebec.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Denmark - my country - is all religion. Every home has its own altar, or several altals so we can pray in private. That culture fits very well to our climate.
When we get really bored, then we take a charter flight to warmer, more southern latitudes where we also watch TV all day long.

Well i will answer this in this way:

Emperor Franz Josef and Empress Elisabeth "Sisi" are still ruling the entire Empire out of Schoenbrunn Palace.
Dancing Waltzes is genetic, thats why we are starting everyday with singing and dancing the "Blue Danube Waltz" since the day of birth.
We are using the "Fiaker" horse coaches to go to work.
Everyone ownes a private Lipizzaner horse.
We have "Sachercake and Applestrudel" for lunch.
We are born with ski's and during Winter, we are skiing right after work to the "Prater Amusement Park" where "Heurigen Wine Taverns" are located on the mountains surrounding the "Big Ferris Wheel" and St. Stephens Cathedral.

cheers Rickster
