A New World First Bus.

Looks like a Dennis Trident with Duple Metsec body and a 220KW Cummins Engine. Great Acceleraiton but rather firm ride. The firmness makes it feel more stable though. Overall a great bus.

LF278?

Thu Apr 12, 2001 1:41 am

Just noticed now but isn't LF278 an ex-CMB bus already retired by NWFB? Leyland fleetline. 4 speed clutchless manual. Real stuffy in the summer!

A few more wild guesses:

LV-Leyland Victory
DS-Dennis Short
DM-Dennis Medium
DL-Dennis Long
DA-Dennis Air-conditioned
VA-Volvo Air-conditioned
LA-Leyland Air-conditioned
LM-Leyland Medium

Others I don't know XF, LX, DC
Citybuses' Leyland Olympians and a few Volvos are powered with the Cummins L10 engine. According to Citybus' web site, the Dennis Dragon's powerplant is the same. Why is the sound so different?

DC - Dennis Coach or perhaps Dennis Carlyle-body

LX - reference to the Gardner 6LX engines in those Guy "Arab" Mk. V buses. Earlier models with less powerful 6LW engines were known as the "LW" class.

XF - "F" most likely in reference to those buses being Leyland (Daimler) Fleetlines. They were ex-London Transport buses, so perhaps that explains the "X".

Although the Olympian and some Dragons may share the same basic L10 engine, a lot of other components may be different. For instance, the accessories drive, the intake tract, the exhaust piping, the amount and location of the engine compartment soundproofing, the acoustic properties of the bodywork around the engine......etc.

Oh.....about those NWFB Dennis Tridents -- I hope they'll do something about those seats. They have some of the worst seat pitch I've sampled in recent years. The older Volvo Olympians are miles ahead in that department. Also, one particular style of seat on those buses (usually those Metsec-bodied ones) is totally inconsistent with the human back.

In short, I simply avoid them whenever possible!!

Hey, Hkgspotter1,

My enthusiasm for buses never quite went beyond "lukewarm". But let's say I keep tabs on what's going on, and I'm into the historical stuff.

But the way, didn't you used to be a train spotter??
