Annoying Users / Deja Vu

Tue Apr 17, 2001 3:16 am

I noticed how annoyed people got at the Boeing757 / Mars stupic Canjet in a can joke topics. They are annoying, I agree.

But I am having a bit of a deja vu here: One or two years ago, while I was only really interested in the pictures of www.airliners.net, I looked curiously at the forums, only to find them crowded with about 50 topics by the same user, all demanding to "get rid off EgyptAir" - even under false topic headings....

So, why do some sad individuals find nothing better to do in their time than to annoy everyone? Why did that particular user months ago react like this (I have no idea: Anyone remember that incident?)

I suppose there is no way to stop this, so I have another question: Is removing these users really the solution? Within two minutes, they get a new username and start again (eg Boeing 757 / Mars) - and with renewed fury and stupidity. Just look at how pissed off Drukairxxx was when he got thrown out - at least he did not post 50 new topics when he vengefully returned insulting our administrators and this website, but only one....

Wouldn't it be better to just delete most of their threads, leaving still one behind, so that they can just calm down and sod off, instead of starting on a revenge crusade against the airliners.net forums that seriously annoys everyone?

Hi Ikarus,

I think that bearing in mind most users on these boards are probably <20 years old, there is inevitably going to be a lot of silly bantering (arguments) going on, as well as silly posts.

That's just something which you have to accept (albeit grudgingly!); this is partly why I now devote most of my time to pprune, which is well moderated and has a lively mixture of contributors that manage to maintain decent standards of civility (with the occasional verbal riot of course Big grin ).

The problem is that there are not enough moderators, who spend enough time checking the boards; there are also too many contributors here who mix politics with aviation-not a good idea!! I sometimes wonder whether their stronger views have been fabricated in order to elicit resentment & cause offence....I really doubt these people maintain such postures in real life...

A more effective way of keeping trouble-makers out would be to log their IP addresses and block them (is this possible?) Obviously there will be some who can get around this by preventing their IP address from being shown.  Insane

In short, the only thing that keeps me here, are a few contributors, whose posts I thoroughly enjoy....the rest, forget it!!

CaptPicard: Just cause someone is under 20 doesnt mean they are going to act as childish as some people on here. I for example have been a member of airliners.net for almost 2 years and I feel I have not annoyed anyone to death. I may have annoyed a few people with some of my silly questions in the beginning but I pretty much know when to keep my mouth shut now. Also there is a way to ban people to where there is no chance they can come back but I dont know if airliners.net has that. Maybe they should.

Yes I do contribute, I won't give my pprune handle away though  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Sorry for that generalization in my first post; indeed it is true that the age of a contributor does not necessarily have an effect on the quality of their post; even I am under 20!

But I am just trying to explain that usually, (and I emphasise the word usually Big grin ), the older the contributor, the more mature his overall character, and this will usually be reflected in the quality of his posts, and his reactions to posts loaded with issues that he/she might not agree with.

That's enough from me anyway!

Well, I'm not part of PPRUNE, as I am no professional pilot and probably never will be one. Also, I feel quite at home here, where I can be sure that most other users are similar to me in some respects: I.e. they are enthusiasts with a passion for planes, who aren't necessarily experts...

Also, I love the pictures...

So does anyone remember the Egyptair episode I mention?

Capt. Picard the only bantering I see is spewing from your direction.

I went to PPRUNE and honestly, it sucked. The forums are all screwed up, there are too many of them and they are all boring. I think Johan does a better job with Airliners.net.

The fact is that the airliners.net site is primarily oriented towards the photos, and everything else is secondary. This is not necessarily a bad thing, the forums are still nice, and I'm not trying to complain but it's just a fact.

As one can see, the feature that gets the most prominent positioning on the home page is the photo search and photo addition, not the forums, and it seems this is what the site revolves around, is advertised as, and draws new users to -- the forums just support and develop the community.

My post above proves I went to us public school!  Smile
It should read:

I think the reason I find it more laid back is the majority of the users are British and get my jokes, when they annoy many people here, so I am trying to reduce them!
