Here is an artical from Keloland TV:
Threats of school violence are all too common after the shooting at Columbine high school two years ago.
Since that deadly day, KELOLAND TV has stopped reporting threats - unless there's a genuine concern from school officials.
Today Sioux Falls superintendent Jack Keegan came to us, asking for help in stopping rumors, after graffiti surfaced at Roosevelt High School.
The writing on the wall-although it makes no specific threat- has the school taking extra precautions.
The date April 20th or 4-20 has long been tied to senior skip days and marijuana use. It's also the day 13 Columbine students lost their lives.
Now, graffitti points to problems tomorrow at RHS.
It's not something you see every day at Roosevelt High School. Adults on watch at the front doors - monitoring everyone who comes in and goes out.
The school is taking action after four graffiti messages, written in felt tip marker on a boy's bathroom wall, showed up in the last three weeks.
Principal Jim Denevan says, "This is basically the second note that we received. It says 4/20 - the day we smoke; the day we choke; the day the school will choke."
The first message read 4-20 beware; another - surprise 4-20. We can only show you a portion of the fourth written yesterday. It uses bad language.
"It's the same person three times, it's a boy, and we've identified what portion of the day," says Denevan.
In an effort to find out who's responsible, the school put students to the test.
"We had a Roosevelt High school quiz then on Tuesday morning and we had 10 questions we asked every student in the building and got handwriting samples from every student in the building," Denevan says.
The school is now looking for a
"It did narrow it down and we have investigated over 25 different people plus we've had 40-50 people come in and talk to officer Schaeffer or myself," he says.
Principals and the police are doing locker searches, checking backpacks - but there's still no suspect. They're confident tomorrow will come and go without a problem but are still playing it safe.
Denevan says, "We'll be sweeping the school, every inch of the building tonight. We'll be sweeping completely, every inch of the building tomorrow morning before anybody gets in."
Keegan won't consider calling off classes - he says that would only hold people hostage to fear.
If the person writing the notes is found - they'll likely be suspended and face criminal charges.
The person who turns them in will get a 300-dollar reward.
END OF ARTICAL
And I must say! Yes, the rumors are flying around school. Such things as it's going to be a blood-bath tomorrow, to they have now found a hit list. What to believe? Some people I know are staying home tomorrow, becuase they are scared, whihc is a legitimate (sp) reason, but still. We are alowed to come in ONE door tomorrow, yes, all 2000 students. Plus, we are going to have officers patroling the building all day long. I feel safe, I am going to school tomorrow. I think it is really stupid. I thought it was clever how they got handwriting samples from everybody, i had no clue about what it was for. The quiz was basic questions about the school. The ad-rooms who got the most right, get pizza parties, sounded harmless enough. But I really feel nothing is going to happen, though, i might just be wrong.
Any questions, comments?
