Thoughts On Sailing...

Fri Apr 27, 2001 1:45 pm

Ok, since this is the non-aviation forum...

I lived in Michigan for two years, and during part of that time, I lived on Lake Huron. Being from a desert state, I had never been exposed to living around water. I was fascinated with all the boats (and still am) I decided that someday, I was going to learn how to sail. I just recently enrolled in a sailing class at the University that I'm attending - it will start next fall. Have any of you been sailing, and if so, what are your impressions of it?

LOL Western, I've been sailing quite a few times. The boat's I've been on have been 4 man Sabbots, both 1 and 2 sailed. The thing about sailing is that you are at the control of the elements. If there is too much wind, you can easily capsise (flip over) (that happened to me last weekend at Lake Castaic, here in LA). However, if you don't get enough wind, it's rather boring.

It takes some tactical thinking, because you always have to get the wind on the right side of the sail. One direction you'll be having a great time, then the other, you'll need to zig-zag around the water in order to try to catch the wind (called tacking and jibing). It's fun but I prefer having a motor.

Motor boats are so much funner. You can do much more. That and you don't have to worry about how much wind there is and all. I live on Lake Erie and Presque Isle Bay, and we own a boat, so we are always out on the water.

It's weird, I live by the water, have all my life, and have never been sailing or on any type of boat for that matter.
