Overhead Signs On Freeways Lit Up?

Sat May 05, 2001 8:31 am

OK guys, world's stupidest question:

First off this question is directed to people in the USA.

In your area do the overhead signs on freeways/interstate highways have lights under them AND do they actually go on at night? Some here have the lights but all are off...

That is the stupidest question I have ever seen. Yes, they are lit up in NW PA.

Here in Long Island, as well as in most other parts of the US, Overhead Signs on Freeways DO have lights that automatically (yes, kinda like magically) light up when it starts getting dark. I think they use these things called light sensors, something like that. Anyways, yeah, signs in Long Island do get lit up.

Hmmm, as you say most places in the US, then the NHDOT must be staffed by a bunch of money happy losers eh? ALL of our sign lights are turned off, however the ones under the toll sign on I-93 are on. haha

Anyone else?

Not here in Boston! Only a few especially just outside the city have lighted signs. Otherwise Interstate and main state roads use reflective lettering that get "lit" up by oncoming headlights.

BA: Really! We do!
In the Central Valley where fog causes massive pile-ups, there are freeway signs that light up and warn of 'HEAVY FOG NEXT 2 MI.' They also have messages in the case of heavy freeway delays.

Here in Alaska we don't even have signs on our wagon trails. Of course, we only got indoor plumbing in the rich people's houses just last fall...

In IND, we have lights under the signs that light up. INDOT also has installed some dynamic message boards on 465, 65 and 69.

NON of MDOTs thousands of signs in Michigan are lit. NONE. We have some light up message boards mounted on some bridges though.
