Can Aspirin Really Prevent A Heart Attack?

Thu May 10, 2001 4:24 pm

How many here take an aspirin a day?

Is this really supposed to help cut the risk of heart attacks? Any doctors here?

Thank You.

Asprin is a blood thinner. That is why you NEVER give asprin to somebody who is bleeding.

The link with heart attacks is that there is evidence that it's thinning properties helps prevent clots from forming.

I don't have any studies or anything to refer to but it makes sense.

It makes your blood thinner but it doesn't prevent you. It can be one of the medications that you get after a heart attack but you get also a million other pills. It depends on where your heart is injured. And there are a many other pills that can prevent this.
Taking too much aspirin is bad for you health. You can find it in the group of the acetylsalicylacids. It can give you stomachulcera. It's also dangerous during pregnancy. You are not allowed to take aspirin a couple of days before surgery.

Btw: what is the link with civil aviation?
