Sun May 13, 2001 3:46 pm

Being that Israel is in the middle east why is it allowed to enter the Eurovision song contest?

Israel is part of the European Broadcasting Union of which Israel is a member of,

Also, you can watch the ESC in Australia , Japan and Jordan although they can't actually participate (for reasons I don't know of)

Glad I could be of help LGW!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Israel is also an awful symbol of western Imperialism.

What a shame!  Sad

I know how long they have been in it Lindy!

Anyway, even if they are in the European Broadcasting Union why? its the EUROPEAN Broadcasting Union and Israel is NOT in Europe so why is it in the EBU? and therfore in the ESC?

Because Israel is a European country.(Why this is the case, I have no idea). Israel also compete in the European football competitions etc.
I used to think the brain is the most fascinating part of my body. But, hey, who is telling me that?

Any member of the EBU is able to participate in the (awful) annual Song Contest. Not every country wants to do so, and a maximum of 23 can compete each year so that it doesn't last more than 3 hours.
Israel has participated 19 times since 1973, and won 3. The Contest has been organized in Jerusalem in 1979 and 1999.
Many years there were heavy political discrimination against the Israeli candidates, the worst being in 1991 in Rome, when 3 countries boycotted a "sure winner": Austria, Germany and Italy; interesting Alliance, isn't it?
And if you're angry to see Israel in the ESC, be happy: they won't participate next year.

Finally someone else who hates that event  Smile
I think Israel was originally taken into the EBU to piss of the Arabs as punishment for the wars of agression they mounted against Israel (and maybe a bit to piss of France, as they hated Israel at the time).
I wish I were flying

Isreal pay into the broadcasting rights. Even Morocco took part once, because they payed.

Luxembourg (a European state, even a winner in the past) do not pay their dues anymore, so they are not included. Monaco is another example.

It's all financial and the voting is too political for my liking.

Quite everybody has answered your question properly, but I'll repeat it once: ANY member of the EBU has the opportunity to participate in the annual song contest.
Israel is a member of the EBU, and thus can participate to the ESC.

Morocco took part once when Israel did not participate. No Arab country member of the EBU wants to compete, because of the participation of Israel...
