Grand Hyatt Duta Kuala Lumpur. When Will It Open?

Thu May 17, 2001 1:50 pm

Hey guys! The Grand Hyatt Kuala Lumpur Project has been delayed again and again. Please have a look at this Press Release from Hyatt:

Katrin C. Lieberwirth (212) 521-1252

CHICAGO - May, 1999 ... Mr. Bernd Chorengel, President of Hyatt International Hotels, recently confirmed a total of 26 new hotels under development, 13 of which are located in the Asia-Pacific region and expected to open by 2003.

"Growth for Hyatt International will continue to focus on Asia where we already have a particularly strong presence and as a result, a firm and positive brand image. Despite the region's current economic slowdown we look with confidence into the future and will seek out further opportunities - not only in key locations, such as Shanghai, but also in emerging city centres and resort destinations where we would like to have a presence," said Chorengel.

"We are very proud of our latest addition in the Asia-Pacific region. Grand Hyatt Shanghai, open since March (soft opening), is the company's first 'Grand Hyatt' in the People's Republic of China. The 555-room hotel has taken on the role as the company's flagship hotel in this country. With Shanghai being positioned as Asia's future financial capital, Grand Hyatt Shanghai will be an important property for our company." Hyatt International operates currently two other hotels in the People's Republic of China (in Xian and Tianjin).

The following 13 Hyatt properties are currently under construction in the Asia-Pacific region (opening dates are approximate):

Grand Hyatt Tokyo (late 2003)
Grand Hyatt Delhi (late 1999)
Hyatt Regency Bombay (2001)
Grand Hyatt Bombay (2001)
Hyatt Regency Goa (2001)
Grand Hyatt Duta Kuala Lumpur (2002)
Hyatt Regency Kathmandu (early 2000)
People's Republic of China
Park Hyatt Beijing (2003)
Hyatt Regency Hangzhou (2000)
Hyatt Regency Chongqing (2002)
Hyatt Regency Hua Hin (2000)
Hyatt Regency Hsinchu (late 2001)
Park Hyatt Saigon (early 2001)
Particularly in Asia, the growth areas targeted by major hotel developers reflect sites that have invested in infrastructure, commercial, and tourism development. The "hot spots" countries include China and India.

Commenting on Hyatt International's growth in India, Mr. Chorengel said, "India is a prime area of interest in Hyatt's development process. Hyatt International has major plans for expansion in India, and by the new millennium, our brand will be quite visible in several of the gateway cities and other key destinations. Hyatt is currently developing six hotels in India with local and foreign investors, and we feel very fortunate to be involved in one of the fastest growing world economies".

He continued, "The tourism industry in India is bound to increase as the country has so much to offer than most places in the world in terms of historical treasures, religion and rich culture."

There are 188 Hyatt Hotels and Resorts around the world. Hyatt International, through its subsidiaries, operates 59 hotels and 20 resorts in 35 countries, with an additional 26 hotels under development. Hyatt Hotels Corporation, a separate company, operates 110 hotels and resorts in the United States, Canada, and the Caribbean.

It was clearly stated that Grand Hyatt Kuala Lumpur will be open in 2002.

However, I have also recieved a letter from the PRs. Please have a look:

>Dear Desmond:
>Thank you for your interest in Hyatt International.
>This project was stopped nearly two years ago and is not on our active list. We are not an investor in the project, and at this point do not have any expectation as to if or when the project will be restarted.
>It is with much regret that I bring you this news. Please let me know if I may assist you with an alternate Hyatt location.
>Kindest regards,
>Internet Coordinator

That caught me in the maze. I am totally confused. Some people told me that it will be opened in 2002 while some told me that the project has been delayed due to the Bad Economic Boom in Malaysia.

I am a frequent user of Hyatt Hotels and I hope it will be open soon.

Does anyone know WHEN will we have a Grand Hyatt in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia? Will we ever have one?
