Decommissioned Ferry Vessels In Hong Kong

Fri May 18, 2001 3:43 pm

Hey guys! I am sure many of you who have been to Hong Kong, have been to Outlying Islands. I love going to Islands like Peng Chau, Mui Wo, Cheung Chau, Lamma etc.

However, since the HK Government has changed the ferry system by ceasing the franchise of Hong Kong and Yaumatei Ferry Company Ltd (Actually HYF gave it up voluntarily), everything has changed. Many Triple Deckors are downgraded to Double Deckors. Also, many ordinary ferry services have been ceased and instead, high speed ferries are being used.

In the past, we used to have triple deckors from time to time. Out of the 12 Triple Deckors, we only have 6 right now and they are Xin Kwong, Fei, Chiu, Kwok, Hing and Fat. Double Deckors includes: Ying, Kit, Heen, Chung.

We used to have To, Tak, Chi, Wai, Sing, Hong etc as part of the Triple Deckor Fleet; Wo, Lung, Yee, Lai etc as our double deckors. However, they are ALL laid up in Lai Ling Chau.

Does anyone know what will happen to these vessels? These vessels belong to HYF and others I have mentioned just now have been transferred to NWFF (New World First Ferry), our new ferry operator. They got us with tons of Fast Boats but NOT ordinary ferries.

I HATE speed boats. I LOVE to stand at the Sun Deck of a Triple Deckor and enjoy the fresh air. How about you?

Everytime you can hear someone vomitting? Oh my God. The old people or the kids? Or Young men and women????

That's terrible.

The Triple Deckors are LOVELY.

However, does anyone know what will happen to the laid up vessels in Hei Ling Chau?

Oooooooooooooooohhhh dear, when was the last time I was on one of those triple deckers!! Must've been sometime in the late 1970's when I was a little kid. Think that was also my last time to Cheung Chau!! I did love the sun deck, and I believe I still have the photograph which was taken on that occasion. Big grin

By the way, I can't even recall the last time I took the Star Ferry across the harbor (sometime last year maybe??). By comparison, on an annual basis, I think I took the Tung Chung -- Sha Lo Wan ferry service more than any other!!

Of course you won't take the Star Ferry, you've got the MTR and the three cross-harbor tunnels.
Anyway for me, Star Ferry is an important connection for me to get to Tsim Sha Tsui, so I take it very frequently!
