Greatest Songwriter?

Mon May 21, 2001 10:07 pm

Who do you guys think is the greatest songwriter of all time?? There are loads of great ones like Cobain, Lennon/McCartney, Gallagher etc but who do you think is the best???
My opinion is that Kurt Cobain is the all-time greatest.

Kurt Cobain????

Are you on acid or something? What did he do (besides get elevated to hero status FOR TAKING HIS OWN LIFE) other than that piece of schidt "Smells Like Teen Spirit" song, that paved the way for the (thankfully) short lived "Mosh Pit"?

Mr Cobain and the decade of wannabe grunge "artists" that followed had about as much effect on music, and originality and creativity as a clump of gravel.

Now Richard Zimmerman (a.k.a. Bob Dylan)

Now THERE'S a legend.

He is untouchable. You may not like his music, but his longevity, and number of musicians that have emulated him in one way or another demands respect.
USA today did a great article about him on the front page of this last weekends edition saluting his 60'th birthday.

How about less known (at least in US) song writers? Like Freddie Mercury of Queen, Greg Graffin and Brett Gurewitz (now formerly) of Bad Religion?

I have to agree with Matt D on this one.

Also:
Neil Peart - Rush
Burt Bacharach
Kevin & Karen Carpenter - The Carpenters
Maurice White - Earth Wind & Fire
Robert Lamm - Chicago
Dennis DeYoung - Styx
Tom Petty
Justin Hayward - Moody Blues

Just to name a few. I'll come up with more later.  Smile

I have more respect for Leif Garret than Kirk Cobain.  Laugh out loud

I put that brat (Kirk Cocaine) in the same catagory as Vannella Ice and Rico Suave!

Well, there have been some really good ones said.

As far as song writing in my book goes, there are quite a few people who always write top quality songs

1. Noel Gallagher (couldn't have guessed could you). Here's why: He always writes what's on his mind, his lyrics may not mean that much on the surface, but if you look into them you might find something. Also, he's never been accused of being the greatest guitarist in the world, but i'll bet my ass he's one of the most creative.

2. Richard Ashcroft All around good songwriter. His solo album is great, even though it got shit reviews.

3. Courtney Love She gets attention, but not to the right part of her. Her songs are top notch, and people should start looking at them rather than her looks. Almost completely underrated in the songwriting category.

4. Billy Corgan World's biggest asshole, but by god can he write some mean songs.

live forever and stay beautiful.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned George & Ira Gershwin.

For someone a little less famous, but IMHO very influencial, how about Antonio Carlos Jobim? Does anyone even know who I'm talking about??

The greatest songwriter of all time?

Too hard to pick a single one.

Lennon/McCartney
John Williamson (gotta be Aussie to know him)
Bob Dylan
BB King
Rolf Harris
Nana Mousskouri

OK, the last two I am joking about.

But the best songwriter IMO, as well as the best performer we have seen would have to be

To the person who said Elton John. Very few of the classic Elton songs are actually his own, rather they have been written by Bernie Taupin.

Paul Simon
John Denver
Carly Simon
Bob Dylan
John Lennon
Paul McCartney

The best of all time has got to be Prince. My mother turned me to his music at a very young age. He has some of the most beautiful lyrics. They are perfect for expressing emotions that I am not eloquent enough to express myself sometimes.
