U.S. Sending CIA Chief To Mideast Amid Tensions

Wed Jun 06, 2001 4:37 am

Why are we using the CIA here? Is their role changing? I always thought they only did covert stuff, and the State Department handled the diplomacy.

Is there something about the Mideast that makes the CIA especially qualified?

You've been watching too many movies.

The purpose of the CIA is intelligence - i.e. finding out what the other guy is up to. That is the type of thing that is needed right now in the Middle East - Finding out where the next terrorism act is going to take place, so that you can intercept.

99% of the CIA's work is spent reading, listening and interviewing. The people who do it are basically the brainy nerds you laughed at in high school. None of this 007 stuff.
