What Happened To Jewel?

Tue Jun 19, 2001 3:57 pm

Does anyone know if Jewel, the girl who's first and thusfar only album (that I know of) was one of the best selling ever, is ever planning on doing anything else with her music? She wrote some poems but I don't think they were much good, the book of 'em mostly sold to people who were her fans and not so muc poets or poetry-readers. Anyway, has anyone heard anything on whether or not she's still alive and singing... I haven't heard anything about her in ages...?

Like most "Top Artists" of the 1990's, she has vanished into obscurity.

Calling her album "one of the best sellers of all time" is really stretching things a bit.

I don't know. Perhaps because her music had no originality or anything memorable about it? I listened to it, and like most other singers of the 90's, I found her music to be sterile, lacking in character, and didn't exactly leave me humming her music in my head.

yeah, she was, at the height of her popularity destined to be the "next Joan Baez or Madonna" in terms of popularity and longevity.

Of course the same was also said of:

Sheryl Crow
Hootie And The Blowfish
Allanis Morissette

And many others.

Where are they now?

90's music was truly a pop music wasteland.

But, things always come full circle:

retro 70's and 80's music is slowly but steadily making a powerful comeback.

And I've actually heard a few current acts that while I'm not overly impressed with, are showing some potential.

Perhaps actual songwriting talent will soon be in the forefront in the not too distant future?

Jewel Released five CDs:
Pieces of You
Night without armor
Spirit
Joy-Holiday Collection
Chasing Down the Dawn

Along with this, Jewel has done a few live performances and was at Woodstock 99 - and has appeared on Leno for the last two years to sing a Christmas song.

An interesting fact about Jewel is she has written over 400 songs but a lot she did not feel comfortable with releasing - plus to keep the record companies happy had to choose songs which would sell.

Take Care

Seems like the same is happening to Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys, and N'Sync, too. Haven't heard of them in a long time.

Jewel is a grocery store chain based in Chicago. It is still around. They are usually coupled with an Osco Drug store. I worked at Jewel/Osco when I was 17.

Jewel/Osco is now owned by Albertson's, but kept its name.

She's playing a free show in NYC Central Park on July 19th. Maybe the cost reflects her current popularity.

Hell I WISH that 70s and 80s was makign a comback, but all I hear on the radio, besides the Classic Hawaiian, is trash! On those pop stations they're getting into heavier and heavier music. It's dusgusting. I hate heavy metal, rap, and all around trash!!
We need good music again!

A 70s, 80s revival would be very healthy.  Big thumbs up

BTW, Britney, Backstreet, and N'sync are still very active. They'll be around for a while, unfortunately.

We need more Barry White and Phil Collins!

Thank you gentlemen, I live in Chicago and am more than familiar with Jewel. We bought some strawberries and sausage from them a few years back and both were half wrotten. Since then we've shopped at the also-local Dominicks.

I didn't know she had 5 CDs out, but yes, her music was some of the most popular of all time. She had some top singles and albums in 97 and sold several million copies of Pieces of You, which as far as I knew was the only good album she wrote.

As far as her music goes, I wouldn't be asking if I didn't like it. The songs were unoriginal? That's funny 'cause I've yet to hear anyone else say the things she says. The song Adrian is awesome, it's either pro-euthenasia or could be used for that cause. That doesn't make it original, but it is original anyway. Pieces of You itself, along with a lot of the others on the album, have a lot of attitude and so forth.

And by the way, N'Sync isn't going anywhere. They had a huge concert here in Chicago (right across the street from the Jewel store...) and we were bombarded with oversized SUVs with windows reading "I wanna *$%#( N'SYNC!" etc.

Aloha 737-200, I like your style. I'm more of a 60s-70s guy than 70s-80s, I don't think much good stuff came out of the 80s.

Has anyone ever noticed that Britney's initials are BS? I think that's cute.

Oh and Timdapup22, thanks for actually answering my question!  Wink/being sarcastic

Jewel couldn't get hit by a car in her home state.

The idea that she is giving a free concert is helarious. This is the woman that played up comming home to Alaska far a millenium concert and then canceled because not enough tickets had been sold.

In high school all she wanted to do was make her voice sound like Whitney Houstons...It was helarious.

If you really want to hear some authentic "Jewel" songs go to the Whale Fat Follies at the Fly-By-Night club on Spenard road in Anchorage. They showed part of a parody skit about her on TV once......It was helarious.

Who knows? Hopefully she'll stay gone too. Let us never hear of her again.

I'm just pointing this out so you know for future reference, not that it matters too terribly much, but it's spelled "hilarious".

I know Britney, BSB, etc are still fairly popular, but they aren't as popular as they were and I haven't heard any new songs from them.
