In 1977, the movie "Semi-Tough" starring Burt Reynolds, Kris Kristofferson, Jill Clayburgh and Robert Preston was filmed in the Dallas area. My friend Lauren and I went out to the Cotton Bowl on a Sunday and were in the crowd. We happened to be sitting about 8 seats away from Jill Clayburgh and Robert Preston and they didn't finish filming that day and asked everyone sitting near those two actors to come back the next day and we would be PAID $25.00! (That was a big deal to a junior in high school like me).
Went home and told my parents and they said "Absolutely NOT! You're going to school." (Lauren and I skipped school the next day and went anyway.)
I never did see myself in the movie, but that fall there was a spread in Sports Illustrated about the filming of the movie. One of the pictures was a close-up shot of Lauren and I in the crowd. I was holding up this big poster I had made that said "We love you Billy Clyde" (Burt Reynold's character in the movie) but the poster blocked out my eyes and the top of my head. You could see everything from the nose down, though.
These were my only "brushes with fame".
