How Do You Shave: Lather Up Or Electric?

Sun Aug 05, 2001 6:14 pm

I'm not sure why....but I have a need to know this ultra-important information!

Which is the better way for the male of the species to rid ourselves of the dreaded facial foliage? Straight razor or Electric?

My vote: Remington Electric!!

What age did you start shaving? (Pain in the rump isn't it?)

I shave with a razor. I am a classic fan. I started shaving when I was 14. I had sideburns and a moustache but I shaved them before they were too obvious.

Uh-oh I can see a new war coming up ... Well, here comes my statement:
I have always used a Wilkinson razor. It is more classic than electric shavers are. It is also cleaner, closer and less expensive. But first and foremost I feel much better: the skin is smooth and refreshed, and I just couldn't stand all the noise an electric shaver makes. It reminds me of a big bug flying around my head.
When did I start saving? Don't know, sorry.

At least you don't have to shave your legs. When I was in college sitting in class one day, a guy took out an electric razor and started shaving right there in his desk. Wish it was that easy for us girls!

I use Edge gel and a razor. Any electric makes my neck break out. I also wish I didn't have to shave - it's such a pain in the ass! But I don't want facial hair.

I have been using a Gilette Sensor Excel razor with Edge shaving gel since I started shaving at age 14. I find that anything other than that combination leaves my skin irritated and red with bumps...including electric razors.

I prefer dry shaving just out of the shower, usually with a Bic disposable. Electric shavers hurt. I tried one and it pulled the hairs out. It sucked. Maybe a bad one, but never tried since.

When I am compelled by forces to shave I choose a Mach 3 and whatever foam/gel I have handy at the time. I often don't shave tho. I've had a beard for several weeks now. Started shaving at 13. Sideburns and Mushtache. The mustache became a source of mocking from my less testosterone laden classmates so I shaved.

Its gotta be the razor. It cuts so much closer, less painful... although not as convenient as an electric model or as fast.

I think I started at 13 when I got that little mustache and sideburns. Like Jessman, I was a bit ahead of my peers, but not as far ahead as this other guy who already had a hairy chest (lol), so I escaped the teasing.

Schicks are by far the closest razors in existance IMO. I replaced my Mach 3 with that a day ago. I use Gillete gel w/ aloe, however I want to switch to Edge due to my war against acne. Actually, the Schick helps with that. Electrics are just too damn expensive, and my Schick costs $3.79 @ the local Jewel store.

DELL_dude: I will have to try that.  Big thumbs up

I started shaving when I was 15.

I have only just started shaving everyday (I didn't really have that much facial hair) and had to switch to an electric shaver (Philishave by Philips) to stop my skin from drying out too much.

The Philishave is the best electric razor I have ever used. Remingtons? Nasty.

Cheers,

I use a Mach 3. It works very well. I started shaving when I was 12. I had facial hair much earlier than anyone else. I get dissed a lot about it, but I don't really care.

BH, we don't need to care; we are the MEN.

Me? I started at 14, I occasionally use electric but it's not so good as a razor, which I usually use. And now I'm raising a barb on my chin (already have a nice one  Smile) so I can't use electric as it could shave it too.

I use a Schick Tracer FX (razor) and use Edge Pro-Gel. I started shaving like 3 weeks after I turned 15, so I started in like January of 2000. I have attempted growing a goat but it just feels nasty and I get flak for it (people point and say 'whats this'), but the hair on my chin is tuff and it hurts to shave it, but i just survive.

I do have an electric, but I never use it. I use a Mach3 with Barbasol cream  Smile Hey, it suddenly appeared, and it beats no shaving cream at all!!! I began the very early steps of shaving around my 15th birthday. But really only in the past 18months has it become one of those things I have to schedule my day around. Sleep or shaving? Ahhh, the dilemma  Smile

I use a Gillette double edge in the shower. And by shaving in the shower, you can shave using nothing but water (though I use regular soap).

You can't beat the close shave of a razor.

I use a Braun my wifr gave me a few years back; it works very well. When I travel, I use the manual "scrape" method. I began to shave at age 14, not long after I was wanking full time.  Smile

Ordinary manual razor with Gillette Coolwave gel. Have an electric (a Panasonic, for the curious  Smile ), but its a POS that seems to yank the hair out rather than cut it.

Someone tell me why the hell the "Lift and cut" system on electric shavers doesn't really get close?

I've tried blades too, since 16, but these days I only trim it down to about a millimeter, but if I ever dare shave all the way...within six hours I will have a serious acne infestation! I tried Head & Shoulders, Denorex, and Lysol Toilet bowl cleaner; nothing stops it!

They just kinda pop up like some kinda cell growth, I look like the Himalayans in day!  Angry

I didn't start shaving until I was about 19-20, and even then I only had to shave every few days. I can still get away with missing a day - late bloomer I guess - but the stubble itches, so I usually like to bust it down daily.

I started out with an electric - a remington. It hurt, and it didn't shave that close, but I used it anyway because of convenience. I used that until I was 23.

Then one day, a Schick Extreme Whatever sample came in the mail, so I decided to try it out. It took longer, but it was closer and a lot more comfortable. So I went out and bought a Gillete Sensor Excel, and I had been using that until I dropped and broke it. So I invested in a Gillette Mach 3 - the best shaving purchase I have ever made. I love that thing!

So, for the record:

Gillette Mach 3 w/
Edge Gell
and Gillette Lotion after shave

Makes for a great shave.

Started shaving at 15. First I used the SensorExcel, then switched to a Remington Electric. Then I went back to razor land with Mach IIIs...

Flash forward... for the past two years I've been using Panasonic's Sonic Shaving system- it's great cause it's wet/dry, and it gives a really close shave! So easy, I'm done shaving in less than 10 seconds (only have to shave upper lip and goatee area!)

I hope I'll never have to shave in the bear areas.

This is an interesting thread.

I use a Bic disposable razor.

What I really prefer but it seems unavailable nowadays in litigation concious North America is a good straight razor done by a barber. When you get the hot towels off your face you're a different person. What a hangover cure too.

It would be interesting to see if there is a correlation between the type of shaving device used and age. One might expect that younger member of the forum would be more likely to use the electric shavers, while older members would use the old reliable methods.

I am a razor user myself. When the Sensor Excel first came out I got a free one in the mail from Gillette (sp?) as some sort of promotion I guess. I've been using that, and BIC disposables. I have tried the electric razors but find that they either pull at the hairs too much making them uncomfortable to use, or they don't give as close a shave a razor does.

Besides, when you shaving with lather, you never forget where you left off  Smile

I have used the Gillette Atrd plus razor when I first started at the age of 15. Hair grows really slow on my face so I don't shave that often. I use a remington electric razor right now because I'm lazy to do it myself. If I let my moustache grow long, I shave it manual before the electric razor hurts and it feels like your plucking the hair from the skin.
