AMD Athlon Vs. Pentium

Wed Aug 29, 2001 7:28 am

I'm looking to buy a new computer, but I've had a few people tell me AMD is the way to go. I was looking at:

AMD Athlon 1.4 GHz
Pentium 4 1.5GHz

Besides like $200 in price, is there any difference in performance? Any other advice is welcome. Thanks.

it depends on what your going to do with it. for just games and the internet both would work just fine. but for more advanced applacations i would say the intel

Er, i think the Athlon outpeforms the Pentium, even with the slower speed. Better check that one though.

Athlon is the way to go, cheaper, and better quality.

Dan,

Is that why IBM just dumped it's long-standing association with AMD recently stating that their chips no longer perform at par with Intel? Where heavy processing is needed go for Intel - don't bother with knock-offs. If it's gaming and casual computing then go with the cheap stuff (that's not what a computer's really built for anyways, but that's a whole different argument)

The only Pentium 4's that outperform the 1.4GHz Athlon are the 1.8GHz and 2GHz processors. Even then, the Athlon 1.4GHz performs very close to the 1.8GHz P4 at a fraction of the cost. I build computer systems all the time for people and I have made tons of them with the AMD chip, they are as good as any and they have not caused any problems. Build quality is excellent and I think unlike a few years ago, AMD has or exceeds the quality of Intel. I would recommend the Athlon but that 2GHz P4 does sound good, it is often a matter of preferece but I would go for the 1.4GHz Athlon.

Nothing that you would run right now needs 2 ghz! But it is nice to say you have a 2 ghz computer. AMD dropped there prices again, with a 1.2 ghz costing a mear 99 bucks if i remember correctly.

I would deff. not spend the extra 200 or more bucks just to buy a 2.0 ghz, unless it was a Athlon.
Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, Staten, Uptown, what now? Lets make it happen.

I've owned an Athlon and a Pentium 3. I feel the P3 is a better performer, and it's more of a proven workhorse. Where do you see AMD used in servers ??? YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR !!!

I'd be using it for editing my photos, and some audio things as well (and of course a few games  Big grin ) i went to best buy today and priced a 1.3 256MB RAM, 40GB hard drive etc for $1,003 (without monitor, dont' need it).

I also priced a P3 1.0ghz for $825 (not bad, but 2.0 is already out...)

Amd! it is the best bang for the buck if you look at the benchmarks they amd is keeping up with the intels 1.7ghz and the amd is only 1.4? Save the money and spend it on more ram go with ddr and you are set!

I have always preferred AMD products, as they have performed better for me than any Intel.. Just my personal preferrance..

I'm currently using a homebuilt AMD Athlon-800 system. Great performance and cheaper than the Intel IMO. One warning though: AMD processors tend to run hot. Make sure you have adequate cooling--a high quality CPU heat-sink/fan plus at least two case fans.
