Arab Americans Feeling The WTC Aftermath

Thu Sep 13, 2001 1:11 pm

This is a continuation of Real High's thread in the civil aviation forum (which btw, has been locked by Johan).

CNN has reported that there have been sporadic assaults/attacks against Sikhs, Muslims and those with the color pigmentations like that of Middle Eastern complexion.
As much as I, along with other Canadians, mourn the great loss of lives in NY, it's quite disturbing to hear that these incidents have taken place.
Some have compared WTC incident as Pearl Harbour II- and they're probably right. But also remember that Pearl Harbour also resulted in blatant discrmination against Japanese Americans/Canadians during the war. Let's hope this is not the case this time around.

My deepest condolences to those in mourning.

I hope those stupid attacks will stop ASAP. Those racist and pointless attacks will do no good to anyone. Enough people have suffered already, they don't have to make it worse. Police Departments all over the US have been reported to increase their presense in neighbourhoods with Arabic/Muslim populations. It is sad to see that such measures had to be taken, I hope it will prevent any further attacks.

I have been reading more than posting replys over the last couple of days.

I fully agree with this. Regardless of who committed these acts of terrorism, it does no good to lash out at these people!

I hope and pray that from this our nation will grow closer together and not farther apart!

My hearts go out to the families and victims!

Why doesent your humanitarian Canadian ass tell their brothers, systers, and cousins to stop celebrating. I think some of my fellow Americans limits were crossed when they saw people celebrating.

Mr Fly-By-Pilot,

If it is Arabs who commited this monstrous crime it does not mean that every Arab living on the face of the earth is suporting terrorism.

Is every German Nazi?
Are English people drunk all day long?
Is every American obese?
Does every Canadian live in a shack in the woods hunting all year long?
Does all the French smell bad?

It is too bad for you that you are limiting your opinions on such a small fraction of people. I guess you are just being brainwashed by what you saw on television, I did see Palestianians dance in the streets after the attack and it was pretty sickening if you ask me! I would love to have smacked my fist into their face and my knee into their nuts. But it's too bad that you haven't seen the Palestinians that also laid flowers and prayed for America, yes because they showed it on TV, I saw it.

And those 'Humanatirian Canadian asse' (to use your words) also laid flowers all over the US Embassy in Ottawa, I guess you did not see that neither?

What happened affects us all.

there have been reports of arabs dancing in the streets in the metro new york area. families in paterson, nj and elmont, ny have been seen celebrating. imo, these people are a danger to our country. not an immediate threat, but a danger nonetheless. but we cannot do anything about this.

i have also seen young white men standing outside a mosque in the us waving an american flag. saying "i just want to support my country." i'm sorry, but that is in extremely poor taste considering most arab-americans are feeling the same sense of disgust as everyone else.

Web Vents Open on U.S. Muslims

As the volume of anti-Arab hate speech on the Internet cranked to full blast Wednesday, U.S. Muslims reported rampant harassment on- and offline.

Although the U.S. government has yet to finger a perpetrator in Tuesday's attack, several lines of investigation point to the involvement of an Arab country. Now America's estimated 7 million Muslims are bracing for the backlash.

"We've got reports from all over the country," said Joshua Salaam, the Civil Rights coordinator for the Council on American Islamic Relations, a nonprofit group dedicated to promoting a positive image of Muslims in America.

"People are reporting stuff to us from chat rooms that is absolutely hateful. Our own website has been bombarded with death threats."

Salaam said the incidents ranged from name-calling to mosques being set on fire or shot at with guns and rifles.

At the University of Texas in Austin, students wearing Islamic garb complained that their bags were searched by university police before they were admitted to classrooms, and that they were told to leave the student union because of "anti-Muslim sentiment," Salaam said. A spokesman for the university police department said he had no knowledge of the incidents.

Muslims have good reason to be afraid, Salaam said. CAIR received over 200 complaints of harassment and violence immediately following the Oklahoma City bombing.

In the wake of Tuesday's attack, CAIR urged U.S. Muslims to dispel racist sentiments by helping the victims through donations of blood, money or time. The group also warned people wearing Islamic attire to stay out of public places for the "immediate future" and posted an online form to report incidents of harassment.

"If Muslims are responsible for the attack on America, then Muslims as never before will be in desperate need of American protection," wrote Muqtedar Khan, the director of International Studies at Michigan's Adrian College, in a column for the Muslim-oriented Iviews website. "Muslims in America will need the U.S. to defend them from the rise in xenophobia and hatred that may arise."

The site contained audio messages from prominent American Muslims condemning the attack.

Muslims debated the issue of religious violence on their own sites. While one website argued that the Koran does not condone terrorism, another (which features a burning American flag on its front door) quoted from the Muslim Holy Book as part of an essay condoning violence.

Across the Web, name-calling and calls for revenge continued Wednesday. At IslamOpenForum and Military.com, threats such as "Islam is Satan" and "Wipe Out the Middle East" sparked raging debates.

Others urged calm.

"Just because some people are of Middle Eastern descent does not make them in any way responsible for yesterday's events!" railed "gabesmother1" on an iVillage board. "I am both Irish and German (among other things) and am neither a nazi nor a drunk."

Meanwhile, dozens of webmasters blackened the front doors of their sites out of respect to the victims of terrorism, following the lead of the World Trade Center's website.

Nicolaki, you shouldn't have bothered. Advancekid knows its true, he just bitches about it because he is not happy with the fact that my views on the ME conflict are different from his, and he is frustrated with the fact that he always says a lot of stuff that he cannot support or prove, while other members can.

We've all had a very tough few days. You don't have to be so rude. Why not direct your anger at the people who are actually responsible?
There are many people of Arabic decent around here, and I have not seen a single person celebrating. The heads of the local Muslim community have condemned the attack and encourage their people to give blood to assist the victims of the attack.

Are English people drunk all day long?

Yes!!!

Well, this is making a tradegy worse. People pulling together in the aftermath was heart warming, a whole nation, in fact most of the world felt, mourned, and help through this. But then this, attacks on Arab-americans, muslims and anyone remotely resembling a descendent of people in the middle-east. I mean, Nickolaki did say it, that not every muslim feels hate against the US, just because certain people celebrate, doesn't mean that everyone would celebrate this disaster. The Muslims in the US have no reason to feel anger, and the White Americans who attack these people are just as bad as those who celebrated on that tragic day.

Regards

I just think some Americans got upset when they saw people celebrating. Not to mention seeing two aircraft plunge into one of the great symbols of American and world power, and then seeing them crumble into a cloud of dust and rubble that covered the entire city of greatness. I am sure some people were upset by seing their fellow Americans falling 80 stories to their deaths. I dont know why some of you people cant feel compassion towards our American horror and anguish. I see on the news Brittish and Austrian people using violence towards Middle Easten people all the time, even when there isnt a great personal tragedy going on. I am not saying its right to do this but if you felt our pain you would undersand how some people might react in seing these horrors. I would never attack any Middle Eastern person especially American ones, but I understand how some of my fellow Americans might feel.

Errr....do you care to elaborate on that? I live in Britain and I haven't the faintest idea what you're talking about.

Do not assume that we don't feel your pain. Do not assume that we don't know what it's like to feel pain of our own.

This is really sad, and some examples of blaming arabs, racist comments and such have been demonstrated on airliners.net as well.

Apparently, some mosques in the US were vandalized. It reminds me of what happened to sinagogues in Germany in the late 30's. I hope the US authorities will not let the wave of violance against Arabs and Muslims grow any further. Although the people who planned and comitted those acts might have considered themselves Muslims, it certainly does not mean that the Islam is in any way related to the murder of innocent people.

You don't have to be an American or a New Yorker to feel the pain.

Many of you seem to be surprised by the celebrations in the Arab world. I don't know why. They have been doing it for years, every time a terrorist attack has taken place.

Lets just wait until the investigation is over so we can see how many of our fellow Americans were involved in this.

If you think ALL Palestinians in the Middle East started celebrating, you are VERY mistaken.

For your information, most Palestinians stayed home, and mourned at this horrific tragedy, and some left there homes and condemned the celebrations being done.

So don't say that ALL Palestinians were celebrating, because they weren't. The same with Iraq.

I find it disturbing that some people will always view the US as being at fault.
