'Bastards!' And Other Observations

Sat Sep 15, 2001 2:11 am

These are a couple observations by a D.M. Register columnist I found to be of interest:

Lots of newspapers around the country put out "extra" editions after the terrorists attacked Tuesday.

The best one-word headline of them all may have been on the cover of the San Francisco Examiner:

Talk about what might have been.

Register reporter Tom Suk was at the Des Moines airport Tuesday as planes crossing the country were ordered to land. Suk said one that landed in Des Moines had come from Boston, bound for Los Angeles. It left Boston at virtually the same time as the planes that struck New York.

"There were 16 Marine reservists on the plane that landed in Des Moines," Suk said. "Could you imagine if the terrorists had gotten on that plane? Those Marines would have ripped their throats out. And one of those towers in New York would still be standing."
