How Many Lanes Does Lake Shore Drive Have?

Tue Sep 18, 2001 1:00 am

This is a weird question for anyone who knows Chicago's downtown district really well. I'm wondering if you know how many lanes, including shoulders, in both directions, Lake Shore Drive has on it's big N/NW stretch from Navy Pier up to the Oak Street Beach. Thanks!!!

One of my professors told me that way back in the cold war there were Nike Missiles mounted along L.S.D. to shoot down the Soviet bombers that were to fly in from over the lake and bomb the city if a war ever erupted.

Interesting tidbit of information.

I think it's mostly four lanes (no shoulders) and sometimes five near entrance and exit ramps from Navy Pier to Oak St. Beach.

There was once a Nike battery site somewhere near Montrose Ave. It's now a nature/bird sanctuary.

BTW, I hope you're not a terrorist wanting info about Chicago.  Big grin Big grin

Well, if I was a terrorist I don't see how knowing the lane no.s would help much. Anyway, that's not something I'm too comfortable joking about quite yet...

Actually I was wondering 'cause I'm drawing the reconstruction plans for putting in a tunnel to the mid-lake airport I've been yapping about for a while.

Is that counting actual lanes or the normal half-lanes?  Laugh out loud
I don't know, so this is my signature.
