Bin Ladin-fan Taxi Driver?

Tue Sep 25, 2001 10:25 pm

On Monday, in Kuala Lumpur, I was in a taxi with a collegue (American). The taxi driver was a muslim, from the fact that he wore a certain type of head cover, and his name was Bin-something. No big deal - Malaysia is 60% muslim after all. But on the dashboard, next to where he displayed his permit, was a very nice, gilded 4x6 portrait of everyone's favorite guy, Osama bin Ladin, watching over him just as some people have a St. Christopher on the dash.

I toyed with the idea of playing ignorant and saying some nasty things about bin Ladin in my conversation with my collegue, but thought better of it.

But this bin Ladin character has fans all over the place. U.S. citizens in these parts of the world had better be ready to duck fast once the excrement hits the ventilator.

Cheers,

Charles

Actually I underpaid him! The charge was 9 Ringits, I only had 7, plus a large bill which he could not break, so he accepted the 7! I was rather pleased at that.
