Question About Alcoholism.

Sat Sep 29, 2001 11:48 am

I do not mean to be offensive in any way. I would like to make that clear right now.

I was looking thru the new photos that were uploaded earlier today, and there was a picture of an IL76 nose. It said that the plane crashed because the pilot was drunk. I have heard several other stories about Russian pilots drinking while flying. Is alcoholism a serious problem in Russia? I also read in National Geographic that in the parts of the country where it is dark even during the daytime, many people turn to alcohol, but this is also common in other countries that are in the arctic circle. I am aware that there are plenty of alcoholics in the US, but I am just wondering if it is very big in Russia.

Many eastern Europeans drink a lot. I live in the Czech Republic, where they have the largest beer consumption per-capita...aroung 40 gallons per year per person...and thats an average including all of the people who don't drink (like little kids and stuff). But even Czechs look at Russians as alcoholics, minly for excessive Vodka consumption (which is much stronger than beer). Of course, Czechs aren't the most objective people when it comes to comments about Russians...and after 40 years of communism, who can blame them?

RoyalDutch is right, most people over 40 living in ex soviet block countries have a problem with drinking too much. This is no doubt a side effect of the quality of life that existed during the communist times. People simply had nothing better to do as other sources of entertainment were few and far in between....not to metntion expensive. Also drinking in the workplace was often accpeted for reasons unknown to me(it was so bad that cops often came home drunk!!). The CCCP destroyed many countries and ruined their reputations for decades to come.

Sadly, it's true. I've also heard and read that Russians are notorious alcoholics. As to the Arctic Circle, I was just there this summer, in Scandinavia, and was told that even there drinking is a big problem., especially during the winter. The weather is truly depressing there. You either go on vacation during this time, or just drink yourself silly. This is why Sweden has such strict laws regulating alcohol.

The constant darkness must really take a toll on peoples' sanity.

This should be in the civil aviation forum... Anyway, NW fired a couple 757 pilots at Fargo Intl Airport in the late 80's because they were drinking in the bar shortly before their flight to MSP.
