What To Do When You Can't Sleep?

Sun Oct 07, 2001 4:25 pm

I have a problem sleeping sometimes, as I am sure many of you do also. Differemt people do different things to help them get to sleep.. What do you do?

I do many things..

I have an audiobook playing when I am trying to sleep, usually helps.
Sometimes, my doctor has said that I can take a Benadryl capsule, as the medicine in it can help me to sleep.
Reading sometimes helps..
I come on Airliners.net until I get tired.

But what about when you just CAN'T sleep? What do you do to help? There are nights when I can't sleep and maybe get 1-2 hours that nite, and have to pull a 4-midnite shift, and I feel like crap.. What helps YOU get to sleep? I am open to suggestions, as are many others, I am sure..

Usually, the only thing that works for me is if I read a book for half an hour or so. Then, I can sleep - provided I was tired beforehand.

I usually listen to techno music!

I have always had this annoying thing of feeling most awake at 9:00pm at night, even if I have been feeling tired that day.. Angry

Some things that I do: listen to audiobooks, read, listen to music, make lists!, watch any aircraft that may be flying past, look at the moon and stars, don't worry..

There are also things you can do before you retire: take a herbal sedative tablet like Valerian (not drugs), have a small glass of wine, listen to soothing music, do some relaxation exercises.

Don't drink caffeine after (say) 8:00pm.

If all else fails? Make a point of closing your eyes, and not opening them (I'm being serious).

Hope this helps..

I can actually sleep all the time!! When I flew from LAX-LHR the otehr week, it was a morning flight and I slept the whole way (and the night before). I can actually force myself to sleep (force is kind of the wrong word, but I can sleep all the time). I just close my eyes, and generally 10 minutes (at max) I will be asleep. If I have problems sleeping, I count sheep as they jump out the field!

I usually get on this website and things get posted about every 30 minutes at midnight so it is boring and I fall asleep from boredom, or I go into the chatroom and start a fight about a plane with someone from the UK or Hong Kong who are up. It's all good.  Big thumbs up

DON'T WATCH TV OR PLAY THE COMPUTER! Worst thing for you!

Honestly, if there is a all news radio station, whit a guy who talks realy low and slow, listen to him.
Sure bet he will put you to bed!

This is not a joke!

Or, if you can't go to bed, buy a lavender secented anything, and put that where you go to bed. Ontop of that drink some tea called "Sleepy Time". Great Great Stuff.

Try out what I said, that is what I do and it works better then anything!

Try any or all of the following:

1. Drink some milk. Mildly sedative.
2. Eat some turkey. Contains a chemical that induces sleep. Should be easy if you're Canadian as this wkend is Canadian Thanksgiving.
3. If you live in a cold climate, go for a brisk 30-min walk just before bed. The warm air on returning home will make you drowsy.
4. Take a vitamin supplement called Valerian. This is NOT addictive.
5. Do not stay in bed if you can't sleep. Get up and read or watch TV. Important psychologically to condition your brain that your bed is for sleeping.
6. Do NOT worry about falling asleep. Easier said than done.
7. Get up early in the mornings. Sleeping-in is the number one cause of sleepness nights on the subsequent night. Guess which night most people have trouble falling asleep???? Sunday night.
8. Do not nap during the day.
9. No coffee/stimulants after 8pm or so.
10. Keep the bedroom slightly cool. Not warm.
11. Sleep in the nude.....always more comfortable.
12. Exercise every day.
13. Wear your socks to bed (but otherwise be nude). Sleep researchers have found that warm extremities induce sleep.

I have long suffered from sleeplessness...learned the above at a sleep clinic.

A triple-dose of Nyquil  Big thumbs up

I don't know about a joint, but I think beer isn't such a good idea. It may make you doze off, but your sleep will likely be very restless. While it is a sedative, it also raises your blood-pressure.

This might sound kind of corny, but have you thought of perhaps meditating? I know that if you are peaceful enough, and doing it right, you can fall asleep easier.

Sometimes, when I cant fall asleep, I just start concentrating on my breathing, and nothing else. I take deep, long breaths, and concentrate on that, listening to them, and keeping them regular. Try to get everything else out of your mind.

That tends to work for me. Give it a try.

Hope that helps.

Buy an herbal supplement called "Melatonin" (all natural). I was in Germany last month and with the 9 hour time difference from the west coast, I couldn't sleep the first two nights. I was wide awake at 2:30am, staring at the wall. One little tablet later and I was off in dreamland...!

KROC's suggestion is the only one that works for me. Any type of exercise is bound to make you tired  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Little things bug me and keep me awake...for example leaving the closet door open a bit or not closing the drapes properly. I used to think about those things until I realized what a waste of time it was. So now as soon as something like that enters my mind I fix it right away instead of thinking about it.

Chris, I frequently have the same affliction. I have broken it down to two seperate conditions. Can't get to sleep, can't stay a sleep.

Can't stay a sleep is easier, I sometimes find my sinuses clog up and can't breath through my nose thus leading to mouth breathing and all the dry mouth, throat symptoms that follow. That is cured by wearing a "Breathe Right", those funky band aids that football players wear. They really work! PS, I learned that from Rush Limbaugh about six years ago.

Can't get to sleep is harder. I have realized that this condition is usually caused by something, "on my mind". With out getting too deep, I try to focus on it and figure out a reasonable solution. Yes, the initial fantasy is to confront the offending individual with a baseball bat. But I try to reason out a more acceptable solution. Then I read awhile, then turn out the light.

Also, try white noise. I big ole rumbly fan on low can help. A ticking clock can do wonders also, just don't look at it!!!!!!
