Idea For WTC Memorial

Mon Oct 08, 2001 4:47 am

I can understand the concerns and difficulties for rebuilding the WTC exactly the way it was (although I wish for it). I have an alternate idea that would make the skyline of lower Manhattan distinctive again.

Two CN Tower-style structures, in the place where the old buildings stood, as tall as the CN or taller. Observation decks at the height of the old WTC decks.

You'd have the hight, and prdominance of the skyline, without the thousands of people that the WTC supported daily. It would probably be cheaper to build, too.

Lower Manhattan is not Canada.

Let's keep it that way, shall we?

Well, Matt, we'd design our own.

Look, I have nothing against Toronto or Montreal. Let Toronto be Toronto, and let New York be New York.

Why not rebuild them just the way they were?

You have to rebuild or they have won!

That's ultimately what I'd want, too, but rumblings from the property owner make that sound unlikely.

Remember, lower Manhattan lost like 40% of its valuable office space. That alone leads me to believe that buildings of some sort will be built there. I had heard of 4 40 story buildings. Personally I'd like to see a couple of 130 story buildings.

If people built the new towers the same as the old ones, do you know how many people would NOT want to go work there?!!?!!! Why? Because it will bring back too many memories. Working in tall famous buildings aren't good anymore. My uncles law firm has its office Trans America building, near the top, and he is nervous that they are going to be hit by terrorists if they fight back. This is not what people need, and post partum syndrome is going to be up about 1000% percent if the towers were to be built the same or bigger!
Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, Staten, Uptown, what now? Lets make it happen.

I'f you're nervous about working in a tall building, then the terrorists have won. If I had a company, I would ask for the top floors of a new WTC.

KROC then goodluck in finding employees because chances are they don't want to go up and get trapped on the 101 floor like those guys from Cantor Fitzgerald. I'd rather see Guliani and Pataki's proposal of the 2 or 4 towers no higher than 50-60 stories. As far as I'm concerned the 1&9 and PATH subway lines need to be up and running first before the building are built. Cortland Street Station is in ruins. The mass tranis needs to be strnghtened. We will mostlikely see the succesfully evacuated Marriot Hotel, 5 and 7 World trade comeback way before what will be in place of Towers 1 and 2. Don't look for anything to be built on the site of Towers 1 and 2 for the next 5-10 years except for a memorial. I already met people who work with Morgan Stanly and they refuse to go back. Don't expect the other offices to go. Employees are defianlty scared shitless over this especially when they lose co-workers and other loved ones. Hoepfully it will not be that high.
