Lisbon-a Pleasant City?

Sat Oct 13, 2001 1:22 am

Dear all;

I have decided to take advantage of BA's low Euro fares by purchasing a ticket to Lisbon.

I will be staying two nights, possibly three.

I would like people's opinions on this city, if they have visited, or live there-it would be great to have an idea of the nicer parts-I have already been told about the Belem Tower & Baixa.

Also, what centrally-located hotels are there? My travel agent recommended the Sheraton Lisboa, it does seem too expensive though-is it in the middle of Lisbon city?

Any advice would be welcome. (I will be flying a BA A320, and a B734 or 757 on the way back).  Wink/being sarcastic

Regards

I have been there in 2000 and it was great. The city is beautiful and I had a nice time there. Try to go to one of the beaches maybe in Cascais or Estoril. These towns are nice, too.
Also Lisbon airportis neat.

Well come to Lisbon  Smile
The Sheraton Hotel is really expensive
I sugest you to chek this page, is about hotel in Lisbon.

For sightseeing I sugest indeed Belem. The tower, an old fort and prison really deserves a visit. At Belem don't miss the navy musem. If it is a sunny day go to the area where was the Expo 98. By night I sugest the Doks. Always croweded but always nice. Lots of restaurants and pubs.
I hpoe you will enjoy your stay here in Lisbon.  Big thumbs up
If there is anything else you need, send me an e-mail

A great hotel that I stayed at was Hotel Marques de Pombal... I don't think it was that expensive, the prices range from 22,000-45,000 (about $99 USD to $204 a night), however, this was in February. It's close to every thing and very nice.

I drove to Lisbon from Malaga, Spain in May 1994 and departed Spain via the town of Badajoz. Unlike the posters above, my impressions of the city were not good at all. Sad I was sorely disappointed and found conditions and service not up to my standards. Confused I was irritated for all of the three days I was there and have vowed never to go back. The airport was also one of the dirtiest international airports I have been to.

Perhaps things have changed, but I'm sure the kamikaze drivers haven't. Pissed

CP, long time no see!

I had the privelige of living in Cascais (in a little village called Birre just to the north of the town centre) which is about 20 mins drive from Lisbon from 1987-89.

My favourite part of Portugal - much nicer than the Algarve which is too commercial and full of English and German people. Not what you want to go to Portugal for.

Obviously, I'd recommend the Ritz in Lisbon  Big grin.

And definitaley have a day-trip to Cascais/Estoril. Estoril has the biggest Casino in Europe for example. A tip - in the summer at Midnight all along the Estoril coast there are firework displays in the towns - don't know if this will still be the case.

PS - one's father was the BA manager in Port. - that's why we lived there.

It looks to me that Lisbon doesn't have that much great sightseeing and isn't that clean like London or Paris and their transportation system isn't that great. Reminds me of Rome and Barcelona. But a bit more to see. The transportation system is horible. Either see it by tour bus or rent a car. Amsterdam and Copenhagen were a bit easier to get around via taxi and bus but not much to see. whatever there is you can see it all in one day. Go to a club, party and get drunk and be back at your hotel by 3:AM and get laid  Smile/happy/getting dizzy  Smokin cool

Thank-you for your info regarding Lisbon; interesting to hear from those that didn't like the city; suffice to say I have lived in some very poor countries before, and even now, it is difficult to find a worse place to live than Angola!

I am sure the streets of Lisbon will be a cut above those of Luanda.  Wink/being sarcastic

Hi Eg777er,

I hope you've had a pleasant summer. I will look into Estoril-given I will be going during mid-semester, (I've chosen a weekend in November to do this Big grin ), I really will be limited for time.

The Four-Seasons chain is very nice apparently, but since I am financing this out of my own pocket, I'll stick to what my student account gives me discounts on (obviously the "discounts" are limited to the flashier chains, such as the Sheraton & Intercont!-what a deal  Insane Big grin ).

The way the BA CEP scheme is going at the moment, looks like I'll be joining the beancounters for a while (failing that, I'm going with FR!). I hope the airline industry pulls out of this quickly.

Did you know that Lisbon is one of 3 cities in Europe that was built on 7 hills. Do you guys know what the others are?

Rome and Istanbul.

Enjoy Portugal.
