Your Connection Speed

Sun Oct 14, 2001 3:25 am

Hey all,
Just a question: does anyone have a modem with a speed BELOW 56K?

Wow....those were the days.  Nuts

Sure, I have one. I have an old 14.4 laying around here along with a 28.8. I have a 56 in this computer right now, but I prefer the cable modem for some odd reason so I never use it. Big grin

I have a 56K in the computer. My backup computer has a 14.4 though, and another (currently not working) 486 which I have boxed has a 28.8.

I have a number of 56k, 28.8, 14.4 and 2400bps modems lying around, none of which are in use. My first home internet connection in 1996 was with the 28.8 modem.

Yes, I'm still prehistoric, can't afford cable, dial up speed is actually 57,600.

Still fast enough to keep up with the flaming liberals on this site.

I have a 56k modem, but the lousy phone lines restrict speed to 28K... :-( ...of course, until 1 1/2 years ago, my dad had a 19K modem, until it fried  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

I have O@H cable, Australia only uncapped download cable however upload capped to 16kilobytes/s (note bytes not bits > x2 speed of 56k)

I have a US Robotics Courier V EVERYTHING so mates can dial into me and have fast net connection (well fast for dialup)

My parents still use 28.8 to connect to the net. I have a 28.8 near (but not actually connected) to my computer to use on the rare occasions I need to send a fax. My laptop has a built-in 33.6 modem. But since my primary connection is via cable modem I don't use it very much.

My first experience with going online was with a 1200 bps modem in a 286, connecting to Prodigy.

Use to have 56k but now its PCI slot has been replaced with a network card for the cable modem. The speed is sweet.

I have a 33.6k modem, that means it's supposed to perform at a max of about 3.5Kb/s. It actually has a starting max of 5.0Kb/s and I've seen average out at 4Kb/s!

MY PC has a 56K modem, but now I use a Road Runner Cable Connection. I don't think I could ever go back.

I use a 56k modem. But I am thinking about getting high speed cable. Unfortunately, I will have to wait until Christmas or New Years to get it.  Sad

I use Cable here, fastest is 10M, but usually you only get 8M's.

I have a Creative Blaster USB 56K modem, but I only ever get 31200bps due to phone line limitations. I was thinking of going the ISDN route, but the possibility of Digital Subscriber Line becoming available, which will be ten times faster than ISDN, has made me rethink and I will wait until next year.

I have TimeWarner RoadRunner. My first internet connection also was like 14.4 or whatever connecting to Prodigy! It was completely useless.

My first internet connection was a 28.8 connection to AOL-- now that sucked! I upgraded to 56k, but it wasn't much better, so we abandoned AOL and got EarthLink, which was... almost as bad. It was considerably faster, but it often logged me off unexpectedly (as did AOL) and it took even more tries to sign on...

A little over a year ago, though, we got a cable modem from Road Runner, and I must say, I could never go back. So there you have it, my life story...  Big grin
