What Would You Do If You Were In My Shoes?

Tue Oct 16, 2001 12:11 am

Guys,

I would like you all to be very serious with this because this is really starting to affect my life.

I'm 12 atm and my friends are really starting to annoy me when they tease me about my interest in Aviation.

They're always saying a total pile of doggy mess and it kinda hurts.

Is there a way i could resolve this???

I am @ school in the UK and i really love aviation and i WILL NOT give it up now because i know a flipping lot for my age  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Please be serious,

a very hurt BA777 :-(

Well, I am almost 20, and my friends tease me too. Get used to it, don't take it personally, it's not a big deal.

They can't tell you what you can and can't be interested in.

Errr...I don't know what else to say...

hang in there, buddy. I also was into to aviation at your age, and I was teased by peers. Ignore it as best you can, and try and find friends who share your interest. If you are bullied, you may have to defend yourself. You can do it.

Just beat the shit out of them.  Big thumbs up Actually, just blow it off. Your friends will have intrets at some point, and there pathetic actions will then be diverted.

BA..

You're at an age when being smart isn't very popular.

That will change eventually. My best...no THE best.... advice is to be true to who you are, not what they want you to be.

Have fun and get nutty and be wild like every other kid....but take that love you have for watching a BA777 flex her wings and leap into the air and nourish it. If others don't "get it", don't worry about it. And don't try to explain it to them. Don't act like you're better than they are, but don't back down from the interests you have. Eventually, as you stay true to yourself, other kids will notice that you aren't changing because of them. And they'll be impressed by that. They really will.

(And you've picked an AWESOME airplane to love!)

"So what if i'm interested in aviation." Would be a good phrase to use. Try to make fun of their hobbies.

I don't see why you should even let this affect you. Tell you what, next time one of them says something about your hobby to you say this...

"Well there is something you can do for me"
They will of course ask what it is, so then you say
"You can go f*&k yourself"

Now that is quite a simple way to shut them up, also try "Do I come to where you work and slap the dick out of your mouth?"

Just some simple advice.

I don't see why aviation would have such a stigma to young folks. I just don't get it. It's not like you are interested in umbrellas or breast-pumps or something. Jeeez! When I was young, my friends thought it was kind of cool that I was into aviation. Maybe your friends are just dorks themselves. What are they interested in? Tell us and we will help you light them up with ridicule. heeheehee. If that doesn't work, take KROCs advice and take them behind the woodshed and whoop their stinkin asses.  Big thumbs up

Guys, no matter what you do, if it is different you will get teased!!!

Don't sweat, it does happen to the best of us!! Whenever they are teasing you just think about sitting at the end of a runway watching a 777 or 747 rotate, thats what i do  Smile

although not many of my friends know about it, they just call me Dutch all the time Big grin

I am 22, and I get it now.. I just tell them that they don't have to like it and leave it at that.. I don't let it get to me.. Just like I won't let Bin Laden screw my interest in aviation up.. To do so would be admitting defeat, when that is the LAST thing I would do..

I have never been teased about being interested in aviation, I have taken many girls to the airport! Some have come flying with me, with one we had a look around a challenger!
I think you guys might just over do aviation!

Wow, My friends are awesome. They think it's cool that I'm into aviation. People come up to me and start talking to me about it because they think it's a cool topic. I feel as though since I like it, many people around me are being open up to a new intrest.

Even the chicks think it's cool
Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, Staten, Uptown, what now? Lets make it happen.

THEY are the ones with the problem. Not you!

I'm still sent up even now by mates and I'm in my 30s. They're just jealous because they don't know the difference between a B747 and a Cessna.

Dimwits....but I don't tease them for their total lack of knowledge. Their problem, not mine.

Good luck to you.

I started flying with my Dad when I was 6 years old. Got my license as soon as I was old enough. They say once you get airplane noise in your ears, you can't get it out. I don't remember being teased to often, but when i was, I think it was mostly out of jealousy. Here in the US, most flight schools offer a deal where for about $30 US you can take a 1/2 hour introductory flight in a small airplane, like a 152. You go up with an instructor and he lets you do just about everything except maybe the landing. It's a real exciting thing, and they don't put too many age restrcitions on it. I don't know if they have a similar program where you are, but if they do, I would recommend you try to get these "friends" of yours signed up for a ride. Once they get to do the flying for themselves, they are going to be just as obsessed as you are. Hope this helps..

Hardly any of my friends know that I am interested in aviation. Those who do don't laugh at me. There's nothing wrong with being into aviation: everyone is interested in something else. And I intend to pursue a career in aviation, too (not a pilot or steward but my dream job is an airport/airline manager). Well, too bad, if anyone laughs at me, I'm sure to laugh at their own hobbies.
Unlike Iain, I have never taken a girl to the airport, partly because I'm 15 and have no way of driving her to Malta Int. I agree that it might be a good 'hunting' strategy  Laugh out loud. As for Xewkija Heliport, I think hardly any local girl would be impressed by me taking her to the minute terminal to watch the noisy old Mi-8s!
Keep up your interest in aviation BA777!

I'm 23. I used to get teased loads about it, but not anymore. You have been given plenty of advise which might or might not work. It's unfortunate, but I suggest you just don't talk about your interest in aviation any more, and they will soon forget.

In any case, don't let it ruin your school experience. Work hard at school, have success, and reap the rewards for the rest of your life.

BA777, no one can hurt you if you don't allow them to. This is a very powerful piece of advice. Whenever someone teases you, belittles you, tries to hold you down, abuses you, hurts you, it's because they are afraid of you. By hurting you, they're trying to assert themselves above you in an effort to lessen their fear. But you don't have to allow it. The minute you give in to them, they have won.

Believe in yourself. Love yourself. Have confidence in your abilities. When you have done this, no one in this world can ever hurt you again without you allowing it.

You know, some people might be jealous that you're so enthusiastic about something and that you actually have something to be so passionate about. Most people do not. My brother tells me every now and then "I need something to be obsessed with" even though he gives me s#@t about it more often than not!

I'm 21, my friends pull my leg over loving planes all the time.
Bonjour Chef!
