Does The U.N.deserve The Nobel Peace Prize?

Wed Oct 24, 2001 8:30 pm

Recently, the U.N.and its Secretary General Kofi ANAN
were given the prestigious Nobel Peace Prize.
I wonder if its a merit or something else that goes
beyond my knowledge!
As you can see...efforts to establish peace over the
world are shameful and discriminatory,if i have to
say that!!!

Of course, your participation and your contradictory
ideas are greately apreciated.

Thank you!!!

Someone said it was like awarding a hospital for delivering healthy babies. And I agree completely.

The peace prize was offered to George W. Bush if he promised not to attack Afghanistan, so it seems they'll give it to anyone these days.  Sad

The Nobel Peace prize has gone to wellknown terrorists in the recent past, so the UN might fit right in:
- Arafat, for killing Israelis and hijacking aircraft in the name of peace
- Mandela, for killing white people in South Africa in the name of peace

It is a purely political gesture, and does not have any real value apart from the PR it provides to the person getting it.

Jwenting...i don't know if i have to thank you for this
answer or not!!!
Need less to say that Arafat is a terorist...you know
he's not...and if it was,how could you describe Sharon,
Barak and the others???
Concerning Mandela, you seem confusing him with
Frederic DE KLERK.

Of course, you need an overall...i can do it for free!!!

Well put Jwenting.

Ts-ior,
Actually, Arafat is a terrorist. Before he became a "peace loving" politician he was leader of an anti-Isreal terrorist organization and is responsible for many deaths.

Actually, being from Tunis you should know all about Arafat and his terrorist cronies.

Even guliani barred him from a dinner during the 50th Birthday of the UN in the mid 90s. All of the liberals of course we're at the Mayor but he stood his ground not to associate with murderurs.

Ts-ior:

OK, so I can see how some people could be brainwashed to believe that PM Sharon is some kind of a bad person (guess what, when you are a general in a constantly fighting army, you are going to be responsible for people dying!), but Barak?

As for the original question, no, the UN does not deserve the Nobel Peace Prize. Besides, giving a Peace Prize a month after the worst terrorists attack(s) in the history of the world just doesn't sound right.

Did they deserve the prize?
-in terms of their ACHIEVEMENTS: NO

-in terms of TRYING: ABSOLUTELY

Don´t forget we talk about thousands of ppl who work and sometimes sacrafice themselves for peace.

P.S.:
So I´m a brainwashed person then... only wonder who did it???
At least at the moment Sharon shows less appreciation for human life than Arafat.

I agree with Jwenting... right on, man.

The UN deserves absolutely no recognition.... except recognition as an intrusive international body that has no right to stomp on nation's sovereignty.

There are really few things in the world which are more indifferent than who gets the Nobel Peace Prize.

But according to the rules it has to be given every year.

The few persons or institutions, who might deserve the "honor", they would probably deny to accept it in order not to be mentioned in history books in connection with the former reciepients.

I remember an old saying that an orginization or person will rise to the level of their own incompetence!
