I Am In Love With The New Ford Thunderbird

Thu Oct 25, 2001 2:14 pm

I Am In Love With The New Ford Thunderbird! !  Love

It is a beautiful car!

I am not really into small sports cars that much but this is truley a classy car.
I finally had the chance to sit in one and check it out in real life.
It was black with the convertible hard-top.
They finally got one in at a Ford dealer here in San Francisco.

What do you all think?

I think its ugly. For some reason I dont like old cars, or new cars that have charcteristics of old cars like the PT Cruiser and the new Thunderbird. I like to look the the future instead of living in the past, sorry. However I still like the 1982 Ford Fairmount that my dad use to own, crude but though as hell...not once did it not take us home and we drove it everwhere.

Funny, it looks like a group of hens (women) got together and designed it. WAIT, they did. I'll take the original anyday.

Superfly, I'm not a big Ford fan, but I love the Thunderbird. I think this one is pretty snazzy, but it replaced what in my opinion was already their best looking car. BTW, I can tolerate Mustangs now. They are nice-looking, but being a such a Camero/Trans Am fan, its hard to get my heart into it like the T-Bird.

Thanks Luxair. They tried to incorporate the old style in the design, but it looks like a chick car now. Wasn't the T-bird a muscle car????? Now look at it. Ugh!

I don't see all the studio exec's wife's trading in there 500SL's for this....

But yeah...the market is definetly for women don't you think?

The top comes in many colors.
It's interesting that only those who really 'know' about cars like the new Thunderbird and those who don't like it are those that only judge cars by price and bragging rights (bmw, daimler/Chrysler for example).

It is a chick car but this one can pass. I guy who buys this will still attract chicks and get laid by chicks.
The guys who buy the bmws and honda civics just look like little fairies on 4wheels!  Laugh out loud

I think it's a tasteful contemporary rendition of the original 50's classic. All it needs is a bigger engine- More cubes = More low-end torque = more fun to drive.

It doesn't look that bad, but I probably wouldn't buy one. Maybe I don't "know" cars like you  Big thumbs up, lol.

If you HAVE to buy a Ford at least get a real car Big grin.

I don't really like any of these new "retro" looking cars like the T-Bird, Beetle, Prowler, etc. They are all expensive and all about looks. None of them seem to be very practical.

I agree that the new T-bird isn't very practical.
I do like the 2003 Marauder but I like the current Grand Marquis better.
I don't think a full size sedan should have a floor shift.
I like the column shift, electronic gauges and wood grain dash on a full-size luxury car.

I like the regular Grand Marquis but I really don't think it is the same type of car as the Marauder. Sure, they are based on the same thing, but the Marauder is almost like a modern day Muscle Car. I believe it has 300+ hp vs the 220hp/235hp of the Grand Marquis, and the marauder has an overall more agressive look than the Marquis, which has a granny mobile image Big grin. Its kind of like a Ford version of the legendary Impala SS (the 1996 ish one). I don't really think this thing will become as popular as the Mustang (for an example) but it will probably have quite a cult following Big grin.

I have always been a fan of the Crown Vic/Grand Marquis line of cars. There is just something about these full size V8 RWD cars that attracts me Big grin. I also like the Caprice series of cars, too bad GM replaced it with V6 FWD  Sad.

I agree about the Caprice, Crown Victoria and all other RWD cars. The Marauder has only 240 HP and the Grand Marquis is 220 but because it's the same engine, you can tweek it up to 240 or even more HP. The engine that came with the Lincoln Mark VIII (1993-98) was the same as the Cobra Mustang but had a quieter exhaust that put out 280 HP. It's the same 4.6 block that they are using in these cars.
The 1994-95 Impala SS also had the column shift and electronic gauge display. The 1996 Impala SS had the floor shift and analog gauge display.
The Marauder target buyer is the Impala SS owner according to the Mercury web-site
Both are great cars and I am glad that the Ford/Mercury/Lincoln/Jaguar/Aston Martin auto division is still making 'real cars'.

I don't wanna sound like a smart ass or anything, I know you know your stuff, but the preview I have read all say 300+ hp for the Marauder, no exact number though.

BTW I personally prefer the analog style gauges. I don't know why, I find it easier on the eyes and less complicated to just look down at the needle and see your speed/rpms. Personal preference I guess.

As for the shifter it doesn't really matter to me. I sorta like the way the big divider looks in some cars though.

No problem, you maybe right.
I saw the add 4 months ago and they may have changed it's HP rating. The car hasn't gone into production yet.
They can easily throw in a Cobra engine or similar and that will really get people out of there aging Impala SS (260 HP).
I personally like the column shift so I can lift the arm rest and the chick can go down and you know, ....nevermind! Big grin
It can make long roadtrips more fun for sure. Big grin

Ford is only making 4000 T-birds a year so they know people will pay top dollar. I am not too crazy about this idea. I think $30,000 would be a fair price for this car.

Maintenance cost on the BMWs are stratospheric!

I honesly don't think so. American cars are much more unreliable. You see a bmw running at 150k miles much more often when the person takes little care of it, then you see an american car 150k miles taken care of by the same person.

The Thunderbird has alot more mass also, doesn't it?

Besides that thing looks so long I wouldn't be going much faster then the speed limit around the turds because it looks like it would be a wavy car.

Here is what I have on my 2001 Camry 194 HP V6.

You would be amazed how quick I get that reliable Jap. car off a red light.

The American sports/luxury car is alright, but I don't care for family cars and small cars made by American companies. I prefer Japanese cars as family cars, we have a Honda with 130k miles on it, the only problem we have with it is it's A/C is bad(Seems to be a problem with all Hondas), other than that, we love it. Also I know many other people who are happy with Japanese cars.

Hey Super...
Glad you agree on the 'chick car' thing..but I don't think it's passable. It screams pussy car.

The top only comes in white according to Motor Trend (last month). They tested a black one and it looked like a retro police cruiser when bolted on. Has that changed?

This looks like a good place to make my first post. Personally, I love the new T-bird, but I'm not exactly impartial. I grew up in a Ford family, and have been particularly fond of the T-bird. Unfortunately, I can't come close to affording a new one. I will agree that it could use more power (no replacement for displacement), the 4.6Liter SOHC as a minimum. Overall I find it to be a great car, if a compromised one. But I guess Ford can't please everyone! So for now I'll just keep working on my '83 model. Sooner or later, I'll get that 351W in there, and it'll be time for some fun.

For some reason, Ford has always pitched the Thunderbird to the female buyer.
I can remember an ad for the re-designed T-bird in 1989-90, they had Candice Bergen doing the commercial. That model was more masculine than the current T-bird.
I've even seen pictures for a 1974 Thunderbird that was catering to the female buyer.
Nonetheless, it's still a great car with a Detroit rumble.

It’s still better than the other ‘chick’ cars like the bmw 3 series, Hondas and the awful VW bug.

The 2002 Ford T-bird also came in a special limited edition Neiman Marcus Edition. Again, it is going after the ladies. Then again, I am going after the ladies too! Big grin
The car would suite me I guess.
