Porsche 911 A Fire Bomb Ready To Explade?

Fri Oct 26, 2001 11:18 am

Yesterday I was driving to the store and I was stuck in a traffic jam. Up ahead I saw smoke going over 50 feet into the air. As I got closer; I saw flames shooting out of a brand new Porsche 911 Turbo.
It was not involved in an accident or anything it just stalled at a red light I guess.
I kind of felt sorry for the young guy watching his $115,000 investment go up in smoke.

Is this a potential problem with this kind of car?
After all, German engineering is supposed to be the best, right?

 Confused

That's wierd, it's not like the 911 is some car that explodes like the Pinto or something  Laugh out loud Maybe it could be a problem with just that car.

My guess would be the owner did something stupid. He's a moron if he didn't have it insured so he shouldn't be out the cash. My neighbor had a Buick Park Avenue catch fire on the highway after a transmission problem so something like that could have happened, who knows. But I don't know if I would say they are fire bombs ready to explade at any moment. Smile

The Pinto needed to be triggered by another car!  Laugh out loud

This car just did it all by it's self.
German engineering you would think that all of there cars would have the same superior design and would be flawless.
This car cost more than some homes. not in California of course  Pissed

Okay,
Superfly, tell me how many car fires you see in american cars. Well I am a firefighter. I can tell you. I have been to about 8 car fires in the past 2 years in my city and all of them are 1990-1995 American pieces of crap.

I heard somewhere that the VW Beetle has a fire problem, too, is this true?

Superfly,

Heres an analogy for you.

It's like in the human reace sometimes you get a person who has a handicap, like born without a hand or something...

Anyways, are you going to tell me all of mand kind is messed up? I don't think so.

I see more American cars going into the auto shop alot more often then I do see german cars.

Support your country all you want, but I don't like american cars, and I don't want to argue with you, because your a person who is a die hard lover of a car "company" called Mercury.

How about this superly, you conduct a test for yourself. How about you go buy a BMW to a say your almighty god of a car called "Thunderbird"

Drive them in the same conditions, same fuel, same oil, same mechanic, same roads. Lets see what kind of car lasts longer.
I got 100 bucks on the German Car.

I understand your point and I don't want to argue with you either. I enjoy joking in the forums with you actually and you have some colorful post I must say.

I just wanted to point out that expensive imports don't aways equal reliability and affordable transportation.
When I go buy parts from the wrecking yard, I see just as many imports as American cars. What's interesting is that imports didn't really become popular until the 1980s yet I see just as many late 60s to current wrecked imports.

AHahaha, expensive imports don't fall under the affordable transortation catagory!
That is why they are expensive imports.
People who ususaly buy a Porsche's usualy have money coming out of there bottom...they use super gasoline, they are the cream of the crop.
If they were affordable transportation everyone would have a Diablo or a Porsche.

Maybe that guy found out that he couldn't afford his monthly payments anymore and wanted his insurance company to help him out of the misery.
Poor car.....

BTW, if it comes to reliable engineering nobody beats the japanese. The corolla for example leads the statistics since decades.

Maybe he dropped his crackpipe while driving and then spilled his gin and tonic which made the smoldering crack rock burn more fiercely. Poor guy.

We are very happy with the 996 Turbo, and havn't received any kind of warning from the dealer about a possible fire problem. We've noticed a very important engine's oil consumption though, quite unusual for a brand new car, again the dealer has said it's normal.
I will write to the factory and ask them for some more details about it.

A brand new German engineered car that burns lots of oil?

I'd still carry a fire extinguisher in the trunk if I were you.

I'm sure it was just a problem with the driver or just that car. Was the guy driving it just some kid? It probably was just some kid who barely knew how to drive.

I don't agree. Rich people don't want an unreliable car either. Therefore a car that cost 6 figures would top any automobile in every catagory; safety, reliability, comfort, and power.
