Next French President?

Fri Oct 26, 2001 8:24 pm

The elections will take place in may 2002 and the campaign has already began.
Chirac and Jospin are the favourites, and the polls in France are currently:

Chirac 52 %
Jospin 48 %

I'm interessed in getting the opinion of some foreigners about this election.
Who do you think should be the next french president?

Here is a portrait of the three main candidates:

Jacques Chirac:
68, gaullist (conservative), prime minister from 1974 to 1976 and then from 1986 to 1988.
President of the RPR (Rally for Republic) from 1976 to 1995.
Paris mayor from 1977 to 1995.
Defeated by François Mitterrand in the 1988 elections, and elected president in 1995 with 53% of the votes.

Lionel Jospin:
65, socialist, former advise of Mitterrand, education minister from 1988 to 1991.
Lost presidential race to Chirac in 1995.
Prime minister since 1997.

Jean-Pierre Chevènement:
62, left-gaullist, commercial advise.
Research minister from 1981 to 1983, education minister from 1984 to 1986, defence minister from 1988 to 1991 (resigned during the Gulf War), and state minister from 1997 to 2000 (resigned in september 2000).

Left-gaullist is very new. I doubt Chevenement would like to be called Gaullist.

Chevènement is a centrist, not a true gaullist, but his campaign is very based on the gaullist conception of France.

In some ideas, he is more gaullist than Chirac himself..

Chevenement is not centrist. He's socialist with some strong ideas that don't fit in actual socialist politics.

Well, may be it's not something of my concerne as it
interests mainly France citizens, but i think i can have
an idea about this.

I think, two weeks ago,i listened to Mr Chevenement
in a speech given to two of France 2 journalists...!
The questions was about the American strike against
Afghanistan, the peace process in the Middle East,
the educational system in France,integration,...and
by the occasion...the France-Algerie match.

Mr Chevenement really gave answers of a good
politician. He was fair, and of course i'm not yet well
placed to judge or comment any declaration.

I think his social policy will be appreciated by the
people...it is a necessary compromise.
His position regarding the U.S.savagery in Afghanistan
is moderate and...positive.
What really impressed me is his belief in the legitimacy
of a Palestinian State without the atrocities and the
ever increasing agression of the Israeli.

I think he will be a good president for the French.
I suggest you to try it for a septenat.

I hope i've been clear,moderate and convincing.

Thank you for this topic!
