Affect Or Effect

What is the rule about the use of these words. The grammer checker bought it to my attention earlier today.

I'll take a stab at it.

Effect is when something impacts you, or the outcome of something. Example. The 'effects' of the Sep.11th terrorist attacks on the familys of the victoms will last forever.

Affect is when something changes the way something happens or is delt with. Expamle. The 'affect' of the fumble cost the NY Giants the victory in Sundays game.

I hope that helps. I'm pretyt sure thats right, or close to it.

Affect is a verb. The above post is wrong - it should be 'the effect of the fumble....'

Examples

It was a positive effect

He affected a limp

In effect, that's nonsense

I used to think the brain is the most fascinating part of my body. But, hey, who is telling me that?

The effects were bad

Just remember, effect is a result (remember the 'E' in result) and affect is an action (rememeber the 'A' in action).

If something has an effect, it affects things.

EXAMPLES: Bob's infection had an effect on his wife. Bob's infection affected his wife. Bob's wife knew the fact that the infection was from an infestation. Bob's wife was, in fact, infected yourself. He faxed the fact that she was infected to her and the effect affected her.

FYI, infect is something you get from from 'punching the midget' just after you clean fish.

Just think about the "a" in affect and "a" in action. If you are performing an action, affecting something, use that one. If not, use effect.

Effect is what drugs do to you, affect is what other people feel when they're around.  Smile
