Anyone In The Air National Guard Or Reserves?

Tue Oct 30, 2001 11:28 am

Im hoping to attend Embry Riddle in Prescott in 2003 to become a pilot. But i want the experiance of beeing in the military but i dont wnat to be in active duity for 10 years. So i was thinking about the Air National Guard. Anyone have experiance with this. I think its great cause i get to travel, serve my country, fly military jets, and up my flight hours and get paid for it but have a commercial job also. Thanks

There are forums just like a.net that are about ANG.

I'll see if I can find them.

Most ANG pilots are ex-active military, which is where the ANG fills most of its openings from. It's extremely difficult to be selected to be an ANG pilot as a civilian -- nearly impossible if you don't already have previous flight experience.

No, this topic is in the right spot. Also, as for being a reserve or guard pilot, I second that most are from those who left active duty. Most pilots go through the acadamy, and they will not put you through that, so you can be a weekend flyer. If you have the flight experience, I'd suggest doing the 6 year tour required for flyers and gain the experience you want, as well as getting military educational benefits.

Ericmetallica-you talk about serving your country and flying at the same time. Have you considered trying for an appointment to either the Air Force or Naval acacdemies? The best of educations, it's free, you get paid while you are there. If you are in the top of your class, you will get to flight school. Good luck!!

If I am not mistaken, after you graduate you "owe" the government 5 years-where did you come up with 10 years?

It was amended. Go to college for FREE and serve 3 years, that's all, just training and not even going to war. But, now that has changed and you might go to war.

That's true but he did mention that he would not be going to school until 2003-not tomorrow and God know we all hope this mess will end long before that date!

If you do 4 years at the Air Force Acadamy, you owe the Air Force 6 years on active duty.

You can't have your cake and eat it too.

I interpret your post as a desire to fly fighter jets...but not to have to serve in a combat situation....as most likely will happen during a 10 year assignment in the "regular" military.

Hopefully I am wrong, because it wouldn't do much for this boards view of your character if I was right.

For USAF pilots, the commitment is currently 8 years AFTER you graduate from the Academy or ROTC. (This is more than the regular officer commitment.)
