Chevy S-10 Vs. Ford Mustang

Thu Nov 01, 2001 5:08 am

Well in about a year from now (when I move back to CA) I will be buying my first car! But currently I am torn between what I want. I do not want to spend more then $15,000 as considering soon after I purchase this I will be on flight instructor wages which means not a lot of money!
Here is my delima, I am torn between a Ford Mustang, or a Chevy S-10. They both have there good and bad in my books:
Ford Mustang
Good: A sports car, Convertable, seats 4
Bad: More expensive

Chevy S-10
Good: Cheaper, off road ability, fits surf boards
Bad: Uncomfortable to seat for 4

If you where in my situation what would you go for and why? Is there any other car you would prefer in this price range?

In your never-ending quest to score more and more chicks' phone numbers, go with the Mustang  Wink/being sarcastic

But I wouldn't get either. The 2002 cars are coming out soon and so will the car guides. I would suggest getting the Consumer Reports 2002 Car Guide or use a website like http://www.edmunds.com/ and find a nice car you can afford.

Why would you even bother with the S-10. You can barely fit 3 people. Plus gas money? Forget about it. Just strap your surf board to the roof...Mustang-more fun to drive too!

Do like i do... get a Mustang GT. a V6 mustang is by far a pathetic excuse for a mustang! i have a 1996 GT and it is just awesome! The speed, the roar of the exhuast, ahhh just such a nice car! everyone i know laughs at guys in a V6 mustang or camaro for that matter. the GT is really the only way to go with a Stang. and what ever you do get a stick shift!! you will have a blast in that car!
If you cant down the extra money for the GT dont do it!

Cheers!

You can fit your surboards and haul around all of your sexy chicks in this 1971 Plymouth Satellite Wagon.  Smokin cool

Best of all, you can get these for much less than $15,000.
Low insurance cost too.

Mustang = Cheap

Thu Nov 01, 2001 9:26 am

Get the S-10. My brother just got a Sonoma (same thing) extended cab 4x2 4.3L V6 for his birthday and it's a GREAT truck, it's got everything you need and nothing you don't.

The Ford Mustang is a CHEAP car. I don't care if it outsells every other sports car, it's built with cheap materials, trust me, 2 of my friends have Mustangs. If you can swing it, get a Z28. My friend has a '99 6 spd and when you nail the pedal-- YOU FEEL IT. The F-Bodies have balls of brass.

The 4.3 liter V6 is one of the best engines ever made. It has almost as much torque as a lot of V8s.

The Chevy Astro is the best mid-size van out there. It'll pull, tow, and haul more than any minivan today.

Hey the747man,

Those vans are slow. Very slow. I could beat it with my Yukon any day with my trailer on the back. They are ugly, tall and i don't like it.

The747man. I hope you are like a parent driving around in something like a van for god sakes! I dont know what your hook up is with a stupid van but its strange! anyways Camaros are known for the poor reliability, horrible deppreciation when it comes to selling, plus they rarely ever please the eye like a Mustang does! I havent had a single problem with my GT... only gets better after time and throwing in add on's. Plus its much more comfortable then a Camaro, so... looks like GM has a loser!!! Figures since the Camaro is being put to a well deserved DEATH and the Mustang is still riding strong! Get the stang you will love it! take a test drive this weekend while your at it and let us know you how like it!

Cheers!

Camaros are boring and everyone has one, parents get their teenage kids used Camaros (at least in my school) and the kids drive around in them like they are all that, they aren't, if you really want to impress, get a mustang GT.

No I'm nothing near a parent yet. You know, I get this kind of crap from several people and it pisses me off. All I want is a reliable vehicle, that gives me plenty of space, and flexibility.

THIS happens to be it:

The Chevy Astro is simply not a minivan like parents drive around. It hauls more, tows more than any existing minivan today. It is much more truck-like, and it has a ton of space inside. It has one of the most reliable and powerful V6s, the Vortec 4.3.

It is great for the long drives that I frequently make. Just because I don't want/need a badass sports car like a Z28, doesn't mean I am weird or have a bad taste in cars.

I am a fan of sports cars as much as the other person. But in reality, you can't take advantage of a sports car in a big city like Austin.

So, my van provides me with space, reliability, and power like I need. No sports car can do that. Of course, if I wans't interested in space or capacity, and I didn't need it, than I would probably have a Camaro or something like that.

I actually haul and tow things with my van. Try towing a 6000 lb boat to the lake for the weekend with a sports car.

So the fact is, some people use their vehicles nothing more than to go to and from places. Others use theirs for all kinds of things, like me. A sports car can give you a fast ride, but that's about it. My van gives me space, capacity, and power.

What is wrong with that?

NOTHING, so shut your mouth and mind your damn business.

Hey 747man... didnt mean to get on your case, just givin you a hard time. Im sorry. The only reason why i said that is because 2 of my friends parents drive the same thing. So you can see from my point of view its not the norm for a young guy to drive a van. but then again, in todays society there really isnt a norm as to what younger people drive! Atleast you do have pride in what you drive! And its good you defend what you have. I had no idea it worked out best for you and your needs. so my bad there! If ya dont mind maybe i will promote my ride to the mustang fans out there! Iainhol pay attention to these pics and you will be set for the stang!

God I love the Mustang GT!! well once again im sorry 747man. didnt mean to act out of sorts on ya!

Living in southern California, I prefer a sports car. A convertible isn't such a bad thing in the "Golden" state, either. Two of my friends have Camero Z28's; T-tops, 1999 and 2000 model years. If you look around, you can find late model Z28's in excellent condition/low mileage for around 15k. As for the Mustang, I wouldn't get it unless it is a very late model car and GT. The regular Mustang is (I believe) only 193 horses. Same with the Camero... Although I don't know the engine on the base Camero, I do know it pales in comparison to the Z28's 310-horse power.

So I'd say go with the Z28... you'll get slightly worse gas mileage than you might with the Mustang, but when you're doing 0-60 in 5.4 secs, you'll know why I love this car so much.

“Raw power” cannot even begin to describe the Z28.

Don't worry about your surfboard dilemma...I'm sure you will meet some friends with a pickup for surfing...

What part of California will you be in?

tsully

Get whatever you would have the most pride in driving. I haven't driven any late-model Mustangs, so I don't know how they are, but the S-10's are nice....IF you get one with an extended cab. If you get a Mustang, it doesn't really matter which engine you have in it, as long as you have pride in driving it. Granted, if you get the V-8, you'll get a lot more power and chick-picking up ability. Then again, you'll spend more money on tires, gas, tickets, and insurance. I'd say if you can afford the bigger engine, go for it. If you can't, i wouldn't worry about the guys who own the V-8's laughing at you. I own a 6 cylinder Camaro, and I could care less if the Z28 guys are laughing at me. It gets me where I want to go, I can afford it, where I can't afford a Z (I'm a destitute college student, after all). Besides that, it's still a nice car, and its better than most of my friends cars. Bonus: If you get a 6 cylinder, you can always have the last laugh when some guy in a V-8 thinks he's gonna humiliate you by peeling out from a stoplight, and doesn't see the cop car sitting up the road that's going to be pulling his ass over in about 20 seconds. Just my thoughts.

Tsully I live in Socal, in the hills at the begining of the approach for SNA.

Right now I am leaning towards the S-10. I really like the looks of the truck, and I am also drawn towards it because the lower initial cost, the cheaper insurance, and with a cover over the bed I can decrease fuel burn. I am not too sure about extended cab or not, I would prefer it, however it does cost a bit more, although in second hand cars it is pretty insignificant!

Superfly I really like the 50's Ford, I wish I could have one! I also like the 30's chevy Suburban.

The747man: Are you sure thats even classified as a minivan? I rode in an Astro taxi and man that thing was huge. Im not kidding, that thing had like 3 feet of space between the 2 front seats.

Anyways dont diss The747man because of his tastes in cars. Personally if I had $30k to waste I would get a 2002 Honda Odyssey EX-L-RES in a heartbeat.

Now if I only had $20k to waste I would get a Acura RSX.

See I got some screwed up tastes too

The Astro is based on a full size cargo van, so it isn't really a "soccer mom" car Big grin. I like Vans and Minivans. All that space is great, the only bad thing about them is the mom and 4 kids image they have  Smile.

Kaitakfan, it's no problem.  Smile

Adam84, I agree, but some do classify it as a minivan, and it's really not. Most companies who make the minivans make them like more like a car. The Astro is much more of a truck.

It's a mid-size van, and it does have plenty of room inside like you said.

Well I would never buy that thing. I am not making fun of you because of you likes of cars...some people may not like my taste.
I like the Toyota Supra, but I have a 2001 Toyota Camry v6 pumping out 196 hp (I think) on 18 tires.

I just think those things are too boxy, slow (they are slow, so don't try to argue with me) I hate driving my parents Yukons, they are too big, but not that hard to drive, but I am more of a racer then anything else.

I guess they are just not for me, like my likes are not for you.

Uh, no my van is not slow. It cruises easily, and I mean easily at 85MPH on the highway. It's governed speed limit is 106MPH, and I've brought mine to that and it still had plenty more to go. A slow vehicle is a little 4 cylinder S-10 or a Geo Metro or vehicles like that. My van is no sports car, but it's not slow at all like you say.

What about acceleration? Any car can get to high cruising speeds eventually, but its how fast they get there that counts  Smile.

I am sure that thing has a lot of power, it needs that for hauling, but it doesn't look like a speed demon  Smile.

Anyway, speed isn't everything. I doubt a Toyota Celica can haul a fraction of what the Astro can, and for a 6'1" guy like me a van or large car would be much more comfortable than a small little sports car Big grin.

One of my friends' parents have a '95 Astro that has been very well maintained and cared for, but that thing rattles like hell once you push (and I mean push ) her to 75mph. Not to mention the slack in the wheel. The wheel has so much give to it; you have to practically turn it 'round 3 times just to make a U-turn!

Also, the Astro is so underpowered it's not funny. I think they make it roar like it does for a reason; you hear all that fuss and think you're flying when you're actually doing 0-60 in about 12.8 secs.

I am not at all impressed by the engine, design or long run quality of the vehicle. If there were ever an un-aerodynamic vehicle, the Astro would be it!!

BTW, according to Motortrend Magazine, the Astro does 0-60 in 9.1 seconds. Not too bad for a van huh? Also, I'm sure you know all about how your friend's parents take care of their vehicle.

My parents have a 2001 new Astro and it hasn't got any problems. Our 1986 Safari had 225K or so when we sold it to the people up the street in 1995. They still drive it today, so it probably has around 350-400K miles on it now.

My 1995 Astro has 125K miles and it hasn't had any problems at all. It is a very dependable vehicle. The 4.3 V6 is one of the best engines Chevy has ever made.

I know, that V6 does have lots of power. I'm surprised at how well it passes on the highway and stuff for a van. I doubt Tsully or 174ffth have even drove an Astro/Safari.

How is fuel economy on the Astro? Probably not that good eh? My uncle has a Cherokee which is pretty hard on gas, not too good to have at the moment with all these high fuel prices.
