The Daisy Cutter!

Thu Nov 08, 2001 10:03 am

The US annouced today they are going to be dropping this bomb on Afganistan. It is the biggest non-nuclear bomb, weighing 15,000lbs. It is the size of a mini-van!!
They drop it from a C-130, and it parachutes down, it has a 3 foot rod on the front of it. This triggers the bomb causing it to explode above the ground, clearing the land.

Here is a picture:

All I can say is I am pleased I got a TV yesterday, as I want to see this dropped!

Those were also used during the Vietnam war to create instant LZs.

That's the one in the movie "Outbreak"

Man, that would make for some amazing news footage if they catch it in action

I agree with PHLFlyer that we have been using them recently, it isn't new. But I have not seen a picture and they are bigger than I thought! They did show the explosions from it over the weekend, they are powerful to say the least.

YEP, only transports can drop this baby. I tell you, isnt the C130 about the most versatile aircraft there is?

Good idea Ianhol. Bush needs to do what Jack Ryan did in Executive Orders and televise the bombings live!

Also used in the Gulf, primarily to clear minefields.
When one was dropped on Iraqi positions, a SAS patrol some tens of miles away, reported that they had seen what looked like a nuclear explosion!

OH GOSH! it might not be allowed under international conventions!???? damn who screwed up! ? Someone call the Pope and beg his forgiveness.

Your 'international conventions' died once the second Flight 11 came through someone's office window.

It died again the moment the first anthrax spore fell out of an envelope.

Indeed it dies everytime another al Qaeda loving nutcase makes a phone call.

Your statement is just another whiny diatribe about how the United States, after suffering a grevious wound, must take its' medicine and let all the nasty stuff happen to it, while sitting on our hands and thoughtfully pondering why is it that they think we're so darn not nice...

Drop 10 of these mothers. Tommorow. Drop a thousand of them. In fact drop one for every hour that passes until those in Afghanistan who are fence sitting about the devil they harbor get the idea at long last that we want him and his lieutenants, dead or alive.

are you guys normal???
Normal ended when airplanes crashed through windows of office buildings.

Cluser bombs are 'allowed under international conventions', they have been around since world war 2.

We just want to get rid of the Al Qaeda network, and terrorism. After the US being attacked, anything that brings those bastards to justice, is good!

Fligth152 - yes, I was wrong about the worldwide international ban the reason I said that is history of use of cluster bombs in Croatia by Yugoslav army when the media said it was against war conventions - Yugoslavia has proposed cluster bomb ban (with 12 other countries, which makes it international) in 1976., unfortunately without result and therefore the use was against its policy as I come from a country which was in war, has problems with landmines, and had problems with cluster bombs (ie. a pyrotechnician died while disarming cluster that has fallen on children hospital) generally such weapons are more harmfull to civialians than military I am just shocked how people are happy about use of such weapon and how engineers waste time on creating devices with only intention of killing other people come on, do not drop to level of Palestinans dancing after Sep 11th attack

sorry about the weird format of my post (I am using weird browser right now) and about inserting a sentence where it should not be: as I come from a country which was in war, has problems with landmines, and had problems with cluster bombs (ie. a pyrotechnician died while disarming cluster that has fallen on children hospital) I am just shocked how people are happy about use of such weapon...generally such weapons are more harmfull to civilians than military

That's how it works. I guess it didn't work to clear mines with it during Gulf War. At least no success was confirmed. The droppings had a psychological reason.
