Zone Defense: The Best Thing For The Nba?

Fri Nov 09, 2001 1:42 pm

I was reading this in an article and it is all true. Basketball has recently become a series of individual performances instead of teamwork. We've seen with one on one Shaq crush opposing defenders and Iverson blow past everyone not named Tyronn Lue. The Reggie Miller basketball style has seemed to vanish. With zone defense, boatloads of points won't come from overpowered post players with no shooting range beyond a dunk, especially if you were to leave Shawn Bradley in the lane 24/7, and more passing and involvment from lesser role-players will be essential to a team's survival. Your opinions?

In all honesty raise the basket by 6-8 inches or more. This would change the game for the better by eliminating the players' desire to go for the showy "big dunk"

I don't know if there are any stats out as yet, but I haven't noticed too drastic a drop in overall scoring. Sure, there's the Bulls, Heat, Knicks, Cleveland and few other teams struggling to score baskets, but they've always struggled even before the implementation of zone defence.
I'd rather see the court get bigger by a few feet length and width wise, but I don't think any owner would be thrilled with the prospect of losing premium seats for a better overall game.
'Contraction' by NBA wouldn't be a bad idea. The talent pool is pretty thin on some teams.

The best think for the NBA would be to fold. I can't stand that league.
