You are getting raped. I have a 2001 Chrysler Town and Country (that's a $36,000 minivan) and my wife and I combined only pay $96 a month for full coverage with no deductable insureance. Call State Farm...

Hey flight.. shop a little would ya? I didn't buy a Chevy. I got a good deal on a very nice mini-van. I figured if I was going to have to drive one, I may as well get the best. And with AWD and the other options we got, that is what they go for. I won't tell you how much you should pay for your skateboard and you don't tell me about life in the real world until you graduate either ok, punk?

LOL, for some reason I just can't see Lindy driving a Camry! Maybe a Volkswagen Golf or something like that, but Lindy? In a family sedan? Hmmm, learn something new every day.

No one wants to be a minivan person. But then you find yourself with 3 kids and it's just about the only car that makes sense. So much room... and where I live, you have to have 4WD. Didn't leave me with much to choose from dude.

Why didn't you just buy an SUV? I am not saying SUV's are better then mini-vans (which I think they are) but I don't see too many men who buy a 36k van when they can get a 36k SUV.

I only have third party compolsery, I am considering theft and fire. As far as im concerned insurance is a major rip off It would cost me like 1200 a year even with my perfect driving record, now that 1200 over 4 years ive had a license comes to 4800 How often do you do more then 4800 worth of damage? unless you write the car off...

I'd sooner invest that money in a defensive driving course, better tyres etc. If you drive properly you have no need for insurance.

174.......,

Minivans are meant to carry around kids, they have more room than a lot of SUVs, and they are completely different.

Twotter,

I own a Chevy Astro/GMC Safari van myself. But, the Astro is much more of a truck than a minivan.

Nope, we shopped a lot. What we bought made the most sense for us. And Chrysler gave us the best deal. We have 9 seats, heated windshield wipers, built in engine heater, AWD.. all the stuff we need for Alaska. And some other cool features too. SUV's don't have the comfort or the room. I had an Explorer until we had the 3rd baby, then the explorer just didn't cut it. We need the extra seats for when people come to visti so we can go play tourist. And, Chrysler/Dodge minivans have the best safety ratings of all comparable vehicles on the road. The sliding doors are the best for getting babies in and out of car seats. and there is one sliding on each side. Lots more room than a SUV and they hold their resale value better. I looked up our paperwork so I can tell you exactly what we paid. It was MSRP at $38,600 with the options we wanted. We paid 33,480 at 2.8% for 5 years. They gave us a deal because it was a 2001 model and they were trying hard to get rid of the last of them. They only had 4 left with the four wheel drive. It took 2 weeks to reach a deal and we walked out of the dealership no less than 8 times. Now, go look at the Chrysler web page and see what the pricing is for a 2001 Chrysler Town and Country lxi AWD model. We got a good deal on what we wanted to get. Ford and GM do NOT make a good minivan and my wife and I will never buy a foreign car, especially not a Eurpoean one. They are made for midget people. I am 6'1" and 285 lbs. German cars don't work for me. I had a Jetta for 6 weeks once. Hated it so much I practically gave it away to get rid of it. I will never buy another foreign POS...Have I justified myself enough now??? When I was your age 174, I never thought I would have a minivan either. Funny how maturity can tend to make you more practical.

21 Male

1 at-fault accident (OCT 96), 3 moving violations (OCT 96, APR 97, JUL 98)

1988 HONDA ACCORD LXI CP

Garaged in Iowa City, IA (Johnson County population about 110,000)

That's pretty much what insurance companies consider. I put the population in but I think insurance companies condiser accident rates and other stuff also. Generally you are better off living in a smaller town.

I paid USD $291 for 12 months (through SEP '02). I had the option of paying $26 per month if I wanted to pay in installments. Here's my coverage info with some notations Big grin :

$389 every 6 months for me. how do you get away with paying $26 a month? I live in a small town of 8,500 and $26 is unheard of!

I think as you get older your premiums will go down. I payed somewhere around there when I was in high school and my first couple years of college. My rate dropped sharply once it had been 3 years since my last ticket. It also depends on what type of vehicle you drive and accident rates for that type. If your state requires higher insurance coverage levels it would be higher. I have bare minimum levels for my state. I don't have collision coverage either. Damage to my own car is not covered under my policy but since I only paid $1,800 for it I don't want to pay higher premiums cause it isn't worth it. I just assume the risk that if I wreck my car I'm willing to take the loss of $1,800.

Basically the insurance companies look at:

1. Is this driver likely to be in an accident? (good driver vs. bad, statisticts on age and gender class)
2. Is this car likely to be in an accident? (V8 sportscar vs. 4-cyl. minivan)
3. Are claims likely to be made where this car is driven most? (downtown Chicago vs. rural area with 3 cars per sq. mi)
4. How much are we likely going to have to pay if a claim is made? (expensive to fix this car or can this car do a lot of damage?)

I've found that Progressive offers the best rates for higher risk drivers (young men). They're a good company in my eyes. Don't ever use Geico! Those bastards were ripping me off as I found out when I switched to Progressive. My brother sells auto and homeowners insurance for a large nationwide insurance company in Des Moines and he still has Progressive!

2001 Ford Windstar Minivan insurance @ $54.00 a month. Oh BTW $36,000 for a Chrysler Town @ Country is not getting raped all-wheel drive, Leather Power everything. My Windstar topped out at $29,000 5 months ago, Dang I go stuck with 0.9% and now you can get 0% finacing. But with gas back down to $1.19 a gallon who cares.

Guys,

You gotta realize, ppl have different insurance coverage. Some just have liability, which is what the law requires, and others go all out and get collision.

First of all, I forgot that I started this topic  Big grin I was kinda drinking that time (getting ready for the party).

I didnt mention that I never had an accident. I have only 3 speeding violations (PA, SC, VA) in the past 3 years and one traffic violation (at BWI airport. Instead watching on the road, I was watching planes while driving 3MPH)
My record is two tickets within 3 hours in two different states.
3AM - Spartanburg South Carolina - Driving 2001 Cadillac DeVille 88MPH in 65MPH zone. (not really fast but they've got me)
3 hours later, just after passing North Carolina and Virginia border I was caught again. 85MPH in 55MPH zone. Total for the tickets $400+
For that amout of money I could buy RT ticket (without advance purchase) IAD-GSP and rent a damn car in SC. But who knew???  Big grin
I have $250 deductable and full coverage.

LH423 , My first car was Honda Accord DX, 4 door. When I was shopping for my car few months ago, mostly I was looking for Mini-Van! Yes, Mini-Van.
I like spacious cars. They are very practicle!
I dont have family yet but I'll give you few reasons why I like big cars.

Reason No.1 - When I'm going on my spotting trips (sometimes 8hrs +) and when I'm getting there 3am -4am - or 5am. I wont go to a hotel. I will sleep in the parking garage for few hours, then I will go to the terminal (to use bathroom, brush my teeth etc.  Big grin ) and then I will have all day just for pictures  Big grin

Reason No.2
Back in the time, when I was dating 5-6 different gals at the same time, you think I could afford room in the hotel???
I had just enough space on my back seat to do whatever I wanted.

Reason No.3
I'm still going to the airports on a spotting trips. And I am not "saint"  Big grin if you know what I mean.  Smile

Reason No.4
In March or April I'll be engaged to the girl that is in South Carolina now. I will have big family  Big grin
