Your Internet Connection

Sun Nov 11, 2001 12:27 pm

I have cable, pushing 750kb. I will never go back to a phone line, never ever, ever, never ever, ever ever ever, EVER EVER EVER, use a phone line once you have witnessed true performance. (You will be pulling your hairs out in frustration). Plus its nice to keep the phone line clear.

Well, I've been pulling my hair out for the past two years with a regular telephone line. Mid 2002 they are introducing DSL (Digital Subscriber Line). I can't wait - just hope it's affordable. Speed? Well I've heard it's 2MB/sec  Wow!

I am on my laptop right now using AOL, so I'm getting a 52K download speed at the moment. My desktop which is in pieces while I put in a new video card, more RAM, and a new HD is usually on a cable. My cable would be getting about 3MB/s right now since it is 1:30AM on a Saturday night. Normal is about 1.5 to 2MB/s. To be honest I don't mind dial up, it's just when I want to download music or games and such that I really miss the cable connection. Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Actually, I powered up the desktop and tried downloading some stuff & can't get better than 950kb... so my prediction was a touch high. Big grin

I have a lousy phone line...56K modem, but I only get a 28K connection speed, and It will only download at 3-5 kbps. Plus I am constantly getting knocked off...crummy phone line  Pissed.

I also use cable, however my download speeds rearly exceed 200k/second. Its the fault of the servers though, not mine. Still the speed is amazing, compared to 56k.

p.s. I doubt you guys get 950kb/sec or 2-3mb/sec download speeds...either my connection really stinks(unlikely) or someones trying to sound cool.

Starship
it depends on what dsl package you choose, dsl is bloody exy and no match for cable.

cable speeds are generally going to be < 1mb/s unless its precached on the service providers server in which case Ive had 4mb/s most of the time it depends on how fast the server can upload to you.

According to the test, my cable modem is running at 1457.1 kbps, or about 1.5 MB. Not too bad. I can't go back to dial-up, it's too slow and unreliable. I'm glad I don't have to worry about disconnects and busy signals like I did when I had Netzero(Terrible ISP). AOL was worse, and from my experiences, MSN was the worst.

I'm getting 2400kbps +/- 200Kbps (300KBps) from a line rated @ 960kbps. However, uploads sucks at max 700-800kbps (90-100KBps) I suspect Sympatico gave me a old business account's (2.2mbps) modem as normal residenial modems are capped at 1024/256.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy I'm really happy with Dsl performence though, haven't been down once since signed up a year ago. Best of all, It's all for $39.95Cdn ($26USD)! I haven't tried cable in my area, however, a quote from a friend using rogers @ home in North York area, "My Dsl startup kit just arrived..."  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

For everone with slow cable... You need to checl your connections. Possibly have a loose one.ALSO, go buy a high performance splitter. That halps a lot. When I was in Maryland paying for 500kb I was only getting 195k. I called the cable company and it turned out that the cable in my boys bedroom (they didnt have a tv connected) was the problem. He fixed it, and within 5 minutes I was at 460k. I am sure thats all it is.

AOL is no excuse for an ISP.

I have discussed this completely and thoroughly in other threads. I don't pay for it, it is a free account. And like I said, more often than not I am on a direct cable connection anyway and use AOL mostly for my e-mail addresses everyone knows me by. Second, there is nothing wrong with AOL. They are a little overpriced in my opinion as I would not pay the $24 a month for it, but the service is fine. If you have kids the parental controls are the best that exist. The people that bitch about AOL are only doing so because they are too cheap to pay the inflated monthly fee, but since I don't I can say the service is reliable and they have taken care of all the connection problems that used to haunt them. I would like to know what is so bad about the service... or have you even tried it? If not then don't comment. Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Boeing757fan, that was not in my defense... that was against AOL. But in any case it is VERY outdated. AOL doesn't do the stuff it talks about anymore. Timers? They are more than a year gone. Browser? It is now 100% MSIE 5.5 in 7.0 with only cosmetic changes. Personal Publisher? Long gone too, they now have a much better web publishing tool. E-mail? It is now HTML compatible and now handles all internet coding and attachments. Busy Signals? No more. Pop-ups? Can be turned off in preferences in case you are too stupid to figure that out, you always were able to do that. Spam? That's everywhere. Slow? Nope, faster than any other dial-up I have tried. Sorry, but that was a really bad and outdated article.

Shit you Sam, you are making me feel jealous. I was once on DSL, but mom cancelled it, saying it's too expensive,so we're now on 56k.

I'm persuading her to get cable. She also comments on how slow it is for her to check her e-mail. So now, its up to her to pester my dad!

Well, at the moment I'm getting 360.7kbps according to the CNet applet - but I'm on the Uni network (SuperJANET) http://www.ja.net

On Friday I'm getting hooked up to Blueyonder Cable Internet which is at 512kbps http://www.blueyonder.co.uk

When I'm on the move I get 28.8kbps through my Orange Nokia 6210 (running HCSCD) http://www.orange.co.uk
